Well before i start into my problem let me give you a bit of background. A friend and me rebuilt this carb about 4 months ago. Had a few issues with it backfiring out the carb, caused by improper timinig. We have since changed the powervalve, but had my distributor cap break on me and didn't get the timing right when i stuck it back on and backfired quite a few times (on the current power valve).
On sunday i went to one of those do it yourself car washes and sprayed down the undercarriage and the front drivers side of the motor (really greasy etc..) After i fired it up after that the idle was all strange, surging from 500-800 *my car BARELY runs @ 500rpms* So i said hmm, maybe its just went so i just drove it home (about 1/2 mile no stops). Over the next couple of days the car started to run worse and worse, the car was hesitating when i gave it gas. So i went and rechecked my idle mixture screws. They were off a bit one was 2 turns one was 1 1/2 turns. I set them both to 1 1/2 turns. Drove it like this for a day or so, still hesitated and didn't run to well, didn't want to start and hold idle very well.
I also have been using quite a bit more gas then the last 4 months in this last week. So last night i set the idle mixture screws to 1/2 turn each side, adjusted the idle and moved the timing just s Smidge (advance).
Car was running great in the garage, took it for a spin still running great. Woke up this morning had to make a 30-40 mile drive to the dentist i go to, most all freeway, lots of traffic stop & go, the idle started to drop from when i started it up in the morning. @ idle in gear about 700-800 instead of 900 which it was @ last night. Then i get off the freeway and come to the light and come to a stop and its about 500-800 again, just surging, its about to die so i pop it in neutral which should bump up the idle MADE no difference. Gave it some gas so it didn't die, then i come up to the next light in drive and the car just dies. Now it can't hold an idle @ all, i pull into the dentist and it dies and 3 more times on the way through turns going about 20mph.
So i get there and start turning the idle screw and it doesn't make any difference, i put it to ALL the way and it idles @ about 1200 in park & 1000 in drive. STart driving home and now its idling @ like 2000.
What the crap is wrong with this carb? Is the powervalve blown and causing this stuff to happen randomly or what?
