: Muncie Wide Ratio
Smittie Nov 21st, 07, 9:07 AM This is not a wanted ad so please don't flame me for posting an ad here :noway:. That said, I have been hunting on line for a couple of weeks for a Muncie wide ratio trans, I've seen a few on ebay, in classifieds here, craigslist, etc. If you were me, where would you look? I talked to a guy at True Connections months back and he said the common problem with a lot of these transmissions is the housings are just worn out and even after being rebuilt, they often leak. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
69ttop502 Nov 21st, 07, 9:19 AM There is one for sale over on Corvetteforum, C3 parts for sale. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1863566
65 Imp SS Nov 21st, 07, 9:32 AM Instead of going with rebuilt muncie, I figured after replacing and upgrading parts I decided to go with a new Autogear M22w.
JodysTransmissions Nov 21st, 07, 10:20 AM No matter where you find a used or rebuilt manual transmission, make sure there is some type of warranty. A local buy or find may save you headaches if there is a problem.
Hi-po SS 454 Nov 21st, 07, 10:25 AM I went with the M22W Autogear also. Went with Wally, the Mod of this section. In fact it should be ready this week, maybe.
Also, Directly across from "True Connections" is a tranny shop which works on 4 speeds. They sometimes (rare) have a muncie for sale.
Also check this guy out, you can eat off his trannys after rebuilding. Bought my factory pedals from him and there OUTSTANDING

I will take a look at that tranny shop, I need to get out to True Connections anyway soon - thanks. So is the M22W Autogear a new tranny modeled after the Muncie?
DZAUTO Nov 21st, 07, 10:40 AM It is true that a will used Muncie with lots of miles/abuse may leak a little or a lot. MOST, but not all of the time, the source of this leak is the hole in the front of the main case for the cluster gear shaft. This can be repaired either by shrinking down the hole, or, by having the case bored out and a bushing pressed in. This procedure should ONLY be done by an experienced shop. If this is the only problem with the case, and it is repaired, then just about anything else that is wrong can be replaced. Gears which have worn engagement teeth can frequently be saved and provide many more enjoyable miles simply by replacing the synchronizer sliders with Tork Loc sliders.
So long as the gears are in useable condition, a rebuild kit, Tork Loc sliders, repair of the hole in the front of the case (if needed) and a professional rebuild will usually result in a very good Muncie that will provide a lot of good service.

Jim Mac Nov 21st, 07, 10:57 AM you said you looked on craigslist, but did you advertise on craigslist? I posted a wanted muncie ad and got 3 responses in a week. A lot of guys have stuff they dont advertise. I dont know why this is, but when I need something, I'll post a ad and you'd be surprised what people have squirreled away. Only thing about advertising for a muncie, 9 out of 10 people will tell you the tranny is a M22. So just be informed before you go and look at one. I finally ended buying a whole 71 el camino without a motor for the muncie bell housing and the clutch pedal assy.

I went right to Auto Gear and got mine. I talked with George and he got me set up

Smittie Nov 21st, 07, 1:41 PM I never thought about advertising on Craigslist with a wanted ad, that's a good idea. One thing I have noticed is a wide range of price for a Muncie, but you guys pretty much explained that for me. Good info and I appreciate it. It seems that even a new one from Auto Gear is expensive but not as bad as some trannies. I looked at the ebay seller Hi-po listed, you are right, those look very clean - I wish he was local so I could go and look in person.
Jim Mac Nov 21st, 07, 6:37 PM usually craigslist responses around here is around $350-500 bucks. I scored a 68 camaro 12 bolt with a want ad for $150. got my bench seat in my el camino for free, after posting a want ad. I picked up a orphaned 15x8.5 drag 05 centerline and posted a want ad today for a matching rim. Jim

Smittie Nov 22nd, 07, 7:20 PM Well the wanted ad suggestion for Craigs list was a good tip. I got a call from a guy not far from me that had an M20 built for a big block and didn't use it - it is fresh. It's a 1" pin, 10 spline, 325 case, new synchros, bearings, bushings, and by his description excellent low mileage gears. He wants $1000 and it comes with a bell housing. He gave me his builders number so I can call and confirm a warranty. What do you think? Pics below:

Hi-po SS 454 Nov 24th, 07, 2:04 PM Sure looks good, especially if you can get a warranty (written) . But I'm not a tranny man. Wish I can help you more than that...
Smittie Nov 25th, 07, 10:29 PM Thanks Rich - not sure about the written part, but I did talk with the builder at length on the phone -I may have to settle for that if I choose to buy it.
Dave Murdoch Nov 28th, 07, 1:19 PM Smittie, looks like you have a boy ready to get the keys from you even if he needs a few more years! My 10 year old thinks he owns my '69 the day he turns 16. I told him it will be his someday, WHEN I'm tired of it.

Nice 69 Dave! I like the stance on it - ready for action!!
Sounds like my son. We were driving recently and he say's, "Dad, I can't wait until I inherit this car!" I look over at him just kind of stared at him, his expression changed and he said, "Wait, what does it mean to inherit something?" So I explained to him with a chuckle and he said, "Oh I'm sorry Dad, I didn't mean that............... I just meant............." I said I know what you meant, but you are going to have to wait a while .
5speeds Dec 7th, 07, 4:38 PM This 3851325 case has been altered by boring to except a 1inch countergear, not a bad mod, if done right. However I am not fond of mixing Chinese input shafts ( notice the taper of the engagement teeth on the input) with older gears.
The sliders are used pieces and to me this is worth really not that much...
The TCS switched side cover and bolt on shifter shafts are from 69 -70 transmissions when used with a 27 spline output.
So basically you have a unit thrown together from a bunch of different parts.

Thanks Paul, they admitted that. But I have to fall on the sword here, I posted in another thread http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=201930 that I had found another trans more local and in fine shape. I should have closed this one out too but I blew it. Sorry about that - your information on the muncie I listed here is exactly right.
