I have a friend that has a Baltimore built 70 LS5 that was originally his uncles and has always been in the family. We were comparing docs with my LS6 when we noticed his POP has an R stamp for the carb code instead of H for Holley. Were these mistakes routine or more prevalent at certain plants as this car is all orignal except for a repaint. It has the orignal Holley carb on it.

Rob are you 100% sure it hasn't been changed? Have you talked to his uncle about this?

LS5s did not come with Holleys only the LS6. LS5s came with Rochesters(Quadrajets). The Holley is not original to the car. The "R" is correct on the POP for the LS5.

My apologies! I see what the major porblem is here. I had meant to say his car was an LS6 and we were comparing it to mine. His POP has the engine stamp CRR for LS6 Th400 and the rear code CRV for his 3.31 rear but the carb source stamp is R instead of H?The POP matches his build sheet and the car.

There were some inconsistencies on these through the years Rob. The 69 RS/SS 350 Camaro I did up about ten years ago had an "H" on the POP instead of the "R". I wrote the Camaro guru Jerry McNeish about this and he said there were some incorrect stampings, but also said that the various manufacturers also produced other carbs as well. In my example it could have been Holley that actually manufactured the Quadrajet. You can take this for what it's worth.
Your situation is no big deal in my mind, but I'm not overly fanatical about such things.

Thanks Don for the info. Jerry MacNeish is down in my neck of the woods and he certainly knows his stuff.

Thanks Ed, I did not realize that incorrect POP were so common. I told him that with his POP and the original build sheet he had it covered. Rob

All hydraulic lifter engines after the 1966 models had Quadrajet carburetors. Only the solid lifter engines got the Holley carbs. In short it will have a Quadrajet unless someone at the factory screwed up.
