I was curious if most 383 Sb have so much more torque than a 350 because of just the gain of cubic inches or is it something different.

In other words if I built a SB 400 and a SB 383 identically (cam heads etc.)Would the SB 400 have more torque because of the 17 extra cubes? I am considering just building a SB Stroker for my 4200 lbs Elky. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

yes the 400 would have more torque earlier in the rpm range. The 383 gains the torque advantage over a 350 by increasing the stroke. The extra cubes dont hurt either. Im not a big fan of the 383...but the 400 is the way to go

Go with the 400--if you can find a decent block. I rejected three before I got one that I was willing to spend money to re-machine. Too much core shift in the others.

You WILL want good heads! Vortec at minimum, Fast Burn or other aftermarket heads could be better still. Stock old-style production heads will NOT flow or burn well enough to make you happy.
