I just picked up a set of new eagle rods off EBAY so it looks like I will be building my 427 project real soon. This is what I have. 454 block, Wiseco 4.254 floaters 9.8 with 119cc head, speedpro 4.255 file fit rings, Eagle 6.135 SIR bushed rods, GM #6223 steel crank crossdrilled & nitrated, Heads will be stock #188 open SQ ports or #781 with 2.19/1.88's (also have a set of dart oval 2.19/1.88's). Will run a wieand stealth on SQ port or wieand Xcellerator on ovals with 800 or 850DP. Will balance rotating assembly and would like the motor to spin 6000-6500. I have a few cams but would like to run a solid. I found a cam that sounds good and the price is right. Its a solid crower cam 268/274 236/240@050 563/575 lift with 110C/L. Will this cam produce enough vacuum for power brakes???? Motor is going in a 67 chevelle turbo 400 4.10 12 bolt.

To me, that cam sounds dandy! Especially since you already have it.

tough call on vacuum. the bigger cam we use only has 10", so I think you should be in the 12-13" range.

I'm currently running a Crower roller and at idle pull about 10 inches of vacuum. The power brakes work fine and I've had no problems at all.

You should be fine.

Rich, you mean that mill pulls 10" !!!! I gotta see this thing!

Oh, totally agree with Ron, RUN IT! Was going to add that I **think** I've found one of the best street/strip 427 cams out there, close to your Crower. If the car has any gear I would be tempted to give that cam very little advance to keep upper R's in tact, +2 is all.

Cam looks fine. If you are only going to 6000 use the Dart ovals you can't get a better head.

I had to circumvent any power brake issues by running a higher than desired idle speed. They worked fine around town and stuff, but manuvering at slow speed (parking, pulling into garage) where you would have to do a 3 point or whatever, was flat out scary- like the brakes were gone, and I have a stiff as heck pedal anyway, you really need to push.
Once I jammed the idle up a little bit though, they work fine, and with my tire and brake combo sometimes stopping is as fun as going..
I would think your cam would be OK for power brakes, and if not, you might just have to jam up the idle a bit.

I think I would definitely use the Dart ovals..no doubt for what you are doing.

The cam you are picking is a pretty mild one and should hold vacuum well. It's way too small in my mind to work well with rectangular port heads on a 427. The rpm range the heads need are no where where tht cam is going to peak at.

If you step up to solid roller, I can tell you I had great luck with the Comp 288 street roller. It's a single pattern cam with 244/244 on 110 LSA with .623 lift. It peaked at 5850 in my 427 at 423 RWHP. I was using ported Merlin oval ports, single plane Team G intake and pump gas. The neat thing was that at 7000 rpm it was still making 417 rwhp capped up in full street trim with 2.5" exhaust. It had a really nice flat curve and could still pull to the moon if you wanted to. It ran 11.20's@123 at 3600 lbs. It also held 14" of vacuum. Very easy on parts too.

The old Crane solid flat tappet 290 did well too. I think it's sold under the Powermax line now. I ran that motor for over 20 years in lots of configurations and many different cams. It was a .580/.600 lift deal with mid 250's@.050 on 110 LSA. Borderline on power brakes, but idled clean and also pulled very well.
