Well, I just got the 489 together....
I have to thank every team chevelle member that helped me along with this, this is my first big block and I didnt have a clue about BB parts when I first started! graemlins/beers.gif

Im hoping to be firing it up tomarrow. :D
Soooo... what kind of timing curve should I have for this beast? And my Holley has no ports for vacuum advance! What do I do about that?

489 long rod
10.5:1 SRP pistons, heads decked .020, block zero decked, quench .045
Victor Jr single plane w/ 950hp carb
Lunati Solid/Roller 260/268@.050 .685/.685 108 102

Don't think you will be too concerned with vacuum advance with that cam.... Set your initial to at least 18 BTDC, and then add another 16 to 18 mechanical advance arriving before 3 grand. ( 34 to 36 total )

Think TJC is right on. However you might eventually get vac adv hooked up ( to direct) and see how it behaves. Usually a crisper idle. These motors usually like plenty of timing in at idle and not much at the other end, pretty short timing curve. vVacuum advance helps 'shorten' the timing curve, cleans up idle ( except for the smell), and I hear it 'loads' the converter more. Don't even know if that's good. smile.gif

But its no big shakes to run mechanical advance only. You'll be setting total timing at peak 'power' anyhow.

BTW, I fired up my 440 at 14-15 and eventually set it to 18 BTDC.
