I am considering the purchase of a 1969 El camino SS 396. The Engine and VIN seem off but I have heard that these numbers can be digits away and still be the original motor in the car.
The VIN# 1 36809Z 357283
The Eng.# 13680 T0322 1NC 137794
The 1 in front of the NC may be a I and the T may be a 1 or I.
Please any help is appreciated as this was represented as a matching number and I unfortunatly have given the deposit.

i could not find that engine code, could be a warranty engine block, or not original engine, or restamped engine.
maybe you could get the casting # and the date code # from rear of engine on top of bellhousing flange and post here?

How can the car be represented as matching numbers without the numbers matching? Can't locate an engine code that matches that.

Thanks,
Regardless of the suffix problem the VIN is not even close to the engine sequence #. Would you say that this is not the original engine for this car? The factory is Freemont ?
Thanks

The engine VIN is stamped to match the body VIN. No way it could be off like that and be the original. If the seller represented to car as Nmubers Matching he owes you a refund.

jeffThe engine pad would never have the style or first five digits of the VIN such as 13680. The ONLY place you'll ever find the entire VIN on the car is on the VIN plate itself. The CON VIN for 69 will only include the division (1-Chevrolet), year (9), plant (Z), and the sequence number (357283). If the numbers 13680 T0322 1NC 137794 are the numbers stamped on the engine pad they've been stamped after an engine overhaul and the block being decked. The 1NC 137794 could be almost anything from a work order number or sales receipt number from the shop that did the rebuild.

Can you take a picture of the engine codes? Thats the only way to get to the bottom of what you have. What you posted does not make sense.

The engine is from a 66 fullsize chevrolet from the southgate, CA assembly plant. IN is 396/325 with TH400 and A.I.R. C means southgate, CA plant. The 13680 if it is actually on the engine, was stamped by someone but not done at the factory.

Missed that connection where 1NC{space}137794 might be the suffix IN from the T0322 engine code and C137794 is the CON VIN. Even then wouldn't the CON VIN be preceded by the year as in 6C137794? Still shouldn't have a 13680 on the stamp pad anyway.

I've about given up trying to interpret what is written down incorreclty anymore.

Some fullsize plants in 66 still did not stamp the model year in front of the letter in the vin on the pad. Southgate and Norwood are plants that did it this way.
