: need help picking cam for 383
Mr70MonteCarlo Apr 7th, 04, 4:05 PM here are the basics of my friends 383 that is going into his '68 Z/28, it is a old (RHS) Racing Head Service built engine.
Sportsman 200 heads (2.02 & 1.60 valves, 64cc)
5.7 rods
3.75 scat crank
blocked decked to .000
fel-pro head gasket .041 x 4.166
18cc dished pistons (comp. ratio w/64 cc=9.7:1)
750 holley dp
mallory ignition
original Z/28 intake
hooker headers 1-5/8"
4 speed
3.73 gears
originally, RHS installed a 292 Lunati cam, the intake valve closes at 73*, the DCR will be in the low 7's with this cam, Is there another cam that would do better?
I know Comp Cams close their intake valves sooner, this would bring the DCR up.
Any ideas?
Jinks Apr 7th, 04, 7:26 PM i run a xe294 on my 383 ( have also run a xe274 ) and both were awesome. but I'm running higher compression.. I would recomend the 274 over the 294 for your setup ( but im running 11:1 instead of 9.7 ) but ive never tried any other brand of cam so im rather biased smile.gif with a nice stall you could probably get away with the 294 which might help your heads a bit!
77 cruiser Apr 7th, 04, 10:08 PM I'm using a Clay Smith solid it's specs are 292 @ .013 -- 240 @.05 with .485 lift In. & Ex. Same comp. cept I have AFR 190 heads.Oh yea it's 108 LSA.

Matt Leuck Apr 7th, 04, 11:52 PM I'm running a Comp XE284 in my 383, and I put down 362hp/397ft-lbs (rear wheel).
.507/.510, 240*/246* adv duration, 284*/290* adv. duration, 110LSA
Here's my combo:
383
Scat 9000 series 3.75" crank
GM 5.7 rods, ARP bolts
forged flat top (w/ flycut reliefs) Federal Mogul pistons
4 bolt block, zero decked w/ 4.166 x .039 gasket.
10.77 compression, 8.44 DCR (93 octane)
AFR195 heads (2.02, 1.60, 68cc chamber)
Performer RPM
Holley 800DP
1-5/8" headers
GM HEI with new internals.
Going through a Tremec 3550 5 spd and a Moser 9".

My motor is very similar to yours but its a 408. I ended up going with the xs274s. Should work great in a motor with 9.5 to 9.8 to 1's.
specs: 274/280...236/242 with 501/511 lift.
Tracy Focht Apr 8th, 04, 10:44 AM I would move to a small Comp solid...like 282s and once you go solid, you won't go back to a hydraulic. :D
