Working on steering column and decided to pull the steering box out and strip, bead blast and repaint. Does anyone have general information on servicing a manual steering box on a 69 chevelle or know of any acticles on line? Is there a special seal under the four bolt cover ? I don't want to pull the cover off if it is going to need a special seal or something to re-install. Or if it does need a special seal where can one be purchased? What type lub goes in these things? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There is just a paper type gasket under the side (top) cover. I am sure that you would get a new one if you purchased a rebuilding kit for your gear. The following paper and three scans may help to explain the rebuild process.
