Guys:

The 70SS dash only uses an idiot light for oil pressure. In addition I would prefer to have an actual temperature reading for the water temp. Other than a typical triple cluster under the dash what have y'all done to put an oil pressure and water temp gage in the dash, maybe in place of gages that are in the stock dash. Pics would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

I have seen a few nicely done with aftermarket guages inside the stock dash...

I am leaning this way...

Searching Autometer guage website, there aren't too many small guages that will fit the smaller openings well (although I have seen some cars set up this way)...

Someone here mentioned Classic Instruments. They offer 3-3/8 guages that will fit the 3 large openings of the stock SS dash (naturally, some fabrication is needed); Tach, Speedo and a "Quad" guage (gas, oil, volt, temp in the same housing)... A little pricey compared with the typical "under dash 3-guage" setups, but not too bad for a nice looking, integrated set with a tach (IMO)...

I am looking at the G/Stock line, but lots of different styles to choose...

I don't know why there is no picture of the 3-guage set, but the Quad/speedo set is GS02SLF...

I'm not sure what you're really looking for - I know about the oil light, but the guage cluster supports a water temp gauge already.

Oil pressure would be nice somewhere in the cluster - maybe you could get a multi-guage pod that fits in where the clock goes for oil pressure, Engine oil & tranny temp, etc.

Great idea!!!!!!

Yeah, it would be great if someone made something as a direct swap (same fonts and coloring as the other guages) like Shiftworks/other do with guages and tachs...

Thats the main reason I decided to go all aftermarket; to get the guages I want AND have them all match...

If I could get an oil pressure guage that looked like it belonged, I'd just buy a repro tach and be done...

I used an L bracket (for cabinet corners) and attached an oil press gauge to my heater core box back by the firewall. It's not easy to see outside the car, but in view while driving. I had thought about adding one to the blank space at the dash end of the console, but decided against it (for now)

My first tach had some digits missing.

So I went into Excel, played around with the fonts, and printed a font that was virtually identical to the font used on the tach.

Black background, with a shade of green as close as I could get - no one noticed that I had a small piece of paper glued on the tach, it looked that close.

If you want to do it, there's always a way..... I'd buy the guage you like and try printing what you want on black background, see how it looks.

why not put a guage pod on the window pillar

I didn't like the gauge pods I saw-too modern look for me, plus I usually have a hand there and am used to looking toward the center of the car for gauges (had a triple under radio until I did dash swap).

on my car a previous owner put in small aftermarket gauges in the idiot light holes. Water, oil, amps. I don't know where he got em, but they match pretty well. My cluster didn't have a clock so I put a shiftworks tach conversion in it. If you weren't well versed on chevelles, youd probably think its factory.

Thanks for the help so far guys. Here is a link to a Covan dash insert that looks pretty good but is a little pricey at $900. http://covansclassic.com/parts/description.php?II=371&UID=2007111623085274.77.113.136 It looks good though it seems like there is more work than meets the eye to make this work.
I may just go with a guage cluster under the dash. It has an old school look but then again so do I.

Does anyone have a picture of a bone stock 70 SS dash? I may post a pics request in the Tech section too.

Thanks
