I need recommendations on a complete stereo system for my 71 Chevelle. I'd like something hidden with a remote, and I want to utilize the stereo dash and rear stock speaker openings in the package tray steel. So- 2 speakers in dash and 2 in the back.
Thinking of a powered sub in the trunk, too, but want it to be as simple as possible yet sound great. What do you guys recommend? Part numbers appreciated !!

any kenwood...
they all have a remote and all have 4 outputs (speakers + sub output)
and they make a din sized box to mount the radio in, so you can put it under the front seat..
try crutchfield .com

I used a pioneer stereo that is Ipod ready, 2 Alpine amps and Alpine speakers. The system is in the trunk of my 67 Chevelle and is kickass, I have a marine type controll hidden in the console. I`m unable to use the remote due to the stereo being in the trunk but the console control works flawlessly.

I have a clarion am/fm cd player with 2 clarion 4x4 speakers in front,2 infinity 6x9s in the rear shelf,2 memphis studios subs in a ported box(in the trunk, right below the package tray) powered by a memphis baby belle amp. The sound is incredible and you can turn it up and the sound stays in the car and not booming everyone else.

I cut my dash and radio plate and installed an Alpine AM/Fm CD player for a factory finish look. I have two Pioneer 3 1/2 speakers in custom auto sound front kickers and 2 6X9 Fushions in the package tray. In the trunk I mounted a JEEP type subwooffer box with 600 watt amp. The sound is incredible.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but maybe you can get a few ideas for the equipment.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! The one thing I found with the newer cd radios , and that's because I bought and returned one to Crutchfield, is the lack of control for bass and treble. The one I bought, I think it was a Pioneer but not sure (3-4 years ago) it had thier pre-sets for sound- rock, classical, etc. and could never get it to give the same sound as good as a stock Chevrolet truck radio got. If the music sounded great, voices sounded terrible. Ended up buying a 10 cd player and have it under the seat.

What do you guys have in these controls? I just want to put on a cd or the radio and not have a quagmire of adjustments to make... except VOLUME !!!

The Kenwood deck I have has several pre-set equalizer curves, and also allows the user to customize them if desired. There are separate controls for bass, mid and treble as is typical. There are also built-in cross-over circuits that can be adjusted for the front and rear speakers, and sub woofer level adjustment as well. I also chose to add a variable bass control on my amp to help adjust the subs on the fly. The sub control is the only thing (other than volume) that I need to play with after the initial setup.

Keep in mind the kind of music you listen to. For me there are only two head units,Alpine and Kenwood. Alpine is stronger on guitar influenced 60's music I listen to that does not not have a strong bass presence but Kenwood does a good job with better bass reproduction. Same with speakers. I have Infinity 6x9 in the rear deck because of their strength on the mids and highs and Polk 4x6 in the kick panel. The small Polks can handle so much volume before they start to distort I think they would be a good choice on 6x9.

There is a lot of good equipment out there but there are significant differences it. Take your favorite CD to a store with upper end equipment and try a lot of combos. Your ears will show you the way.

Looks to me that a Kenwood or Alpine are definitely in my future. I looked at Crutchfied at thier line of Kenwood (KDC MP208 for instance) cd players and saw some with the remote I'm looking for. Good ideas here, and I think going with a cd is the right smart way to buy, especially speakers. I've heard Alpine speakers are very good, a good friend of mine has them in a 69 Z 28, and now I'll try the Polks and Infinitys as well.
I'll take some Hendrix, Collective Soul and Pearl Jam and see what's what!!

509 Merlin, can you elaborate on the marine type control you have in your console. I want to install a stereo head unit somewhere in my car, say glove box or under seat, but I want to be able to adjust volume while I drive. So a cable remote would work but where do I get that? Maybe what you describe is what I need?
