: less weight=more performance
69chevelle355 Jul 3rd, 04, 2:07 PM who knows good ways to drop weight without digging deep into my pockets (don't have much money to spend). i can't afford any speed parts right now but i HAVE to go faster.....please help me drop weight for cheap!!!!!!!!
thanks, Jay
Pat Kelley Jul 3rd, 04, 2:36 PM Clean out all the extra weight in the car, spare tire, jack, ect. Take out anything you can get by with out, wipers, heater, A/C, rear seat, right side seat. Pull the carpets and remove any padding under it. Change to manual steering and brakes. Alloy wheels can save a bunch. Aluminum radiator. Smaller radiator, water weighs a bunch.

69chevelle355 Jul 3rd, 04, 3:30 PM mike....that just made my day!!!
Scrape off the under coating.
Miserable job, but it will look nicer with fresh spray bomb paint than with 30 + year old undercoating. You'll lose a little weight, and its a good oppertunity to get an up close inspection of your cars running gear.
If its for the firebird, there are more places to lose weight by removing stuff, than the Chevelle.
Chevelles are just going to be heavy without spending some cash.
pdq67 Jul 3rd, 04, 10:38 PM The high-priced forge-rolled lightweight aluminum wheels and smaller, lighter tires saves quite a bit of weight.
As does all drum, manual brakes BUT doesn't stop worth a hoot to me!!
An AFB is a lot lighter then a Holley carb.....
Aluminum heads, w/p, intake, headers and rad. Plus a f/g hood too...
One of the mag's did a '70's Duster on a diet a while back and listed cost/pound reduction!! Quite interesting.. Summit lightweight race seats and brackets saved a bunch and at not much cost considering...

PS., yes, get one of your very small close friends to wheel your car, (small like a Jockey)!!
Pat Kelley Jul 4th, 04, 1:06 AM I like the jockey idea. That's what they do in Pro Bikes. There is a weight mim with rider so a light riders allows the weight to be put where it does the most good.
69chevelle355 Jul 4th, 04, 10:46 AM thanks guys! and yes, i forgot to mention its for the firebird not the chevelle.
thanks again, Jay
ddeennis Jul 5th, 04, 2:42 AM firebird similar to my camaros......theres alot of weight in the front end removing bumers and extra bracing just hollow out the front clip but leave the plastic on.......remove the rear bumper and supports but leave the plastic cover in place and make a few small support bars out of alum. fuel line to hold the bumper in place in the middle......gut the car out of all the sound deadening material and have just one seat in there......remove the crash beams in the doors on each side.......remove the inner fender wells.........fiberglass hoods weights just under 20 lbs compared to the old heavy stock hood......remove all the rumber bump stops off the frame....all sway bars, add alum rims and alum brake drums to the rear, pull the gas tank and install a plastic 5 gallon tank.......take power steering off......basically strip it down to just a chassis engine and seat......replacing the front windshield with plexi-glass, taking mirrors off........you kinda get the picture.........
knudsonm Jul 5th, 04, 11:43 PM holesaws and sawzall blades are cheap.
BlueSS454 Jul 5th, 04, 11:53 PM Dump the heater box, front bumper, and all the interior. If it's a drag only car, you don't need any of that to race anyways. I think the way it works out is every 100 pounds = a tenth, but not sure about that entirely.
Motor Martyr Jul 6th, 04, 12:06 AM Keep the DOT stuff, it makes you stand out.
