: Suburban 454 up and runnin, not bad
Gandalf80 Nov 14th, 07, 9:12 PM So i got the 454 i pulled out of a suburban running and finally got the car out for a drive. The good news is that it purrs like a kitten, I was actually surprised how nice it ran. I just left it stock except i put my performer rpm with holley 950hp on it, and headers. It drives real nice on the street and was easier to tune than i'm used to, i assume due to the much stronger vacuum signal than i'm used to :)
The downside is that it's a dog compared to my previous 454 :p Revs up way slower and is just a lot less snappy. Guess you can't expect anything different when you go from a 10.5:1c with aggressive solid cam to a factory hydraulic grind and probably 8.5:1c hehe.
Bottom line, I am pumped to be driving my car again after looking at it in the garage all summer with no engine in it...
velle69florida Nov 14th, 07, 9:34 PM hey Chris-
i also have a 71 chevelle that is going to house a 454 out of a suburban. i bought the car a few months back. i had searched for about 4 yrs before i finally found one in my price and experience range. the 454 came out of a 98 suburban and it has 52,000k on it. it is a FI engine and i will be swapping out the FI intake for a performer intake and carb. from what i have been reading on here and some of the help and info i have gotten, it is going to be a little more of an undertaking than i previously thought but i am looking forward to it. i have alot of other work to do to the car while i'm working on the motor. it needs some new sheet metal, i have to put some new guts in the 12bolt i bought for it from a junk yard, i need to take the TH400 trans down to have it gone through and build up a little, needs all new interior, looking for a complete SS dash for it, looking for a new tilt steering column for it, want to put 4 wheel disc brakes on it, ect, ect.
i know, i have a lot of work to do, but like i said... looking forward to it.
i would like to hear about your experience so thought maybe i could gain more knowledge about what i am up against.
i made a few contacts over the past few weeks regarding some potential donor cars here in Ohio (i live in Florida, but i currently work in Ohio). i am hoping these contacts pan out... nothing like original GM sheet metal VS. repro metal.
anyways... congrats on getting her back on the road man!
velle69florida Nov 14th, 07, 10:34 PM well...

mr 4 speed Nov 14th, 07, 10:39 PM Can't beat those Suburban 454's :D
We took a stock rebuild,8 to 1 454 and stuffed a 238/248 @.050 cam into it,RPM,3310 and headers.Runs low 13's with no tuning w/3.07 gears and it runs on 87 octane.
Sounds flippin awesome idling and when your into it...
Gandalf80 Nov 14th, 07, 10:48 PM Hey Jamie, I got mine from a little older truck than you, mine came from a late 70's suburban... The main difference is your's will have a serpentine belt setup which is nice. Mine has unknown miles, i'm assuming it's pretty high.
There's nothing out of the ordinary you need to know. You may not realize that you need a different oil pan, i can't say for sure off of a '98, but i would assume it won't fit either. Other than that, get a 4 core rad, or an aftermarket aluminum one, I also recommend electric fans so that you don't have to worry about tracking down a BB fan shroud. Replacing the front springs with some BB coils springs is a good idea to. I assume you'll also have to set up an electric fuel pump with that engine, because i don't know if a mechanical pump is even an option on the newer blocks.
mr 4 speed Nov 14th, 07, 10:50 PM hey,big block fan shrouds are cheap at Ground Up

Not sure where you're coming from, but maybe I can help you. I'm currently working on a 496 build using a Gen 5 motorhome 454. I'm still in the planning stages so I can't give any solid #'s yet. What is it exactly that you're bummed about velle69?
