I've been thinking about replacing the windshield on my 67. It's original and in pretty bad shape, with scratches and pits. I guess the only option is replacement.

Well, I wasn't even sure where to get one or how much it would cost, and decided to put my info in at Safelite Auto Glass (https://www.safelite.com/sslPages/service.jsp?CLICKED=QUOTE) and was kind of surprised when it showed they have glass for a 67!

The price installed in $195.95. I'm just not sure if the installers on all that familiar with cars this old. I'm sure they would do a better job then I would though

Is this a good price? Anything special I should as for as far as installing?

I would make sure that they install it with the butyl-tape, the way that it was installed from the factory. There are guys that are very good at it, and it held up for many years that way. Looks better too.

Thanks, I'll be sure to ask about that when I place my order

I disagree with the butyl tape, even though it was put that way from the factory. A GOOD glass installer should flat out refuse to butyl tape it anyway. It is a safety issue. Your car is more structurally sound having it put in with urethane, like a modern car.

If I were going that route I would remove and install the stainless trim myself (or have someone else do it that has done it before). Nothing looks as bad as bent/dented windshield trim.

Within the last 6 months I got a new windshield at Novus glass for $155 installed. I would leave all the details of installation to the glass guy. He has installed hundreds of windshields and has all the right tools and skills.

Had both frt and rr glass installed 3 yrs ago by a place called Auto Glass Specialists. They had the tinted windshield in stock, I had to get the rr glass myself. Total cost was $295 that covered windshield, install both frt and rr, adhesive, and fuel surcharge. Best part was they came to me, did it in my garage on a crappy late winter day.

I'd do it yourself if I were you OR find some that knows what they are doing on these older cars. Everytime I have had my windshield replaced in my old cars the installers never get the windshield depth right. They treat it like they are working on a toyota or something, pile in the urethane and then press the glass in without checking the depth of the glass. Then your trim looks like crap with gaps everywhere.

At least thats been my experience with the general installers.

There is nothing wrong with using butyl. Our older cars are already structurally sound without having to use the urethane (modern cars use the glass as part of the structure). I have used butyl a number of times and have experienced absolutely no problems with it.

Windshields are easy to replace-You can go to a automotive store and find all of the items to change. They have special tools. Some kits use a wire to cut the old sealer.
Take your time and make sure all of the old sealer.

Butyl tape is ok if you like the oil that comes out of the tape when it breaks down and even worse when it's hot....Even Chuck Hanson is sold on the urethane sets after we installed a few windshields in his cars. Chucks '66 convertible was in Chevelle world on how to install windshields start to finish...we even repainted the dash for him.

Hey Flameout,
ftrplt here. How did you do with getting your windshield replaced? Are you happy with the results? I am looking to replace all the glass in my 70 chevelle and am wondering how other guys are satisfied with the whole glass replacement deal.

I haven't had it replaced yet. I going to try to finish my interior first and hopefully by Spring I'll get around to the windshield. I think I have to many projects going at once :clonk:

Yay, I would only use the butyl strip caulk. The correct diameter is important and it's an easy do it yourself project.
