Hi I am looking at buying a stock 402, it was recently rebuilt new KB domed pistons and rings etc. it is all standard bore. I asked the guy to do a compression test and this is what he came back with: This was on a cold engine with all plugs removed and throttle open. cyl.1=147psi. cyl.2=147 psi. cyl.3=147 psi. cyl.4=146 psi. cyl.5=147 psi. cyl.6=145 psi. cyl.7=145. cyl.8=144psi.

do these numbers look o.k.? i will probably re-test before buying the motor...

it has the stock 920 heads (so probably 9:1 if lucky) it also has this cam in: summit 1301, 218/228 @ 050 and 500/500

thanks,
ak

The compression numbers look good... they are all really close to each other - I personally think the difference in teh numbers is more important than the number itself. Hopefully somone else can comment on the cam...

looks good here. Should be a decent runner with that cam

thanks for the replies... i'm looking at a 9 hour drive to go see this motor and pick it up this weekend... so i'm looking to reassure myself!!hahaha! i'll be able to hear it run before buying, so hopefully it all pans out to be what he said... price is right for me, BBCs are harder to come by up here!

thanks,

#'s are very good & consistant considering cam & fairly low comp ratio.

I have a 71 with the KB Hypers, and that is about where mine is

I'm in winnipeg, the motor is south of minneapolis... 8.5 hrs + the border... its hard to find bbc's around here... i'm taking my chances on this on (normally i build my own motors), but it is running in the car, all standard bore, rebuilt this spring with new pistons, etc, c/w headers for $1600. Its a 1971-2 402. I may look at a cam swap or intake since it has a single plane edelbrock on it. the current cam was new this spring as well.

Good idea - a sinlge plane is not a great choice for a stock engine. Good luck, I hope it is what you are looking for.
