: Open header / lean condition?

Hey guys,
I was running last night and my engine started popping at the top end of the 1/4. The pops did not affect performance, and I was still able to finish 2nd in the Street Shootout Event. However, the pops do concern me. Since it was a very warm night, could the open headers and warm temperatures have leaned out my carb at the top end. I have not rejeted since winter. I did not get the popping with the cut outs capped only after I opened them.
Thanks,
Daniel

Fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure is the first place to look, then float level, then jetting, and even poor fuel quality. Any of these will cause misfire or detonation. I have seen detonation knock the main caps out of round on big blocks because the driver wouldn't back off when the engine was popping as you describe. Find the problem before it gets bigger.

warm air temps make the car run rich but also might make the engine run hotter causing detonation. jet up when the temp falls, jet down when the temp rises. Is this the first time running with it uncorked? What kind of exhaust is on the car?

I am running a 140 gph Holley fuel pump with a regulator set at 7psi. Headman headers with cut outs. 72 jets up front and 84 jets out back on a Proform main body. I had some popping problems some time ago, but changing my fuel pump to the 140 and installing a free flow fuel filter took care of it. The popping completely stopped. I have an MSD ignition box and an MSD distributor.
I have run corked and uncorked with no problems until this past Friday. I am also running cold plugs with a mix of 93pump gas and VP112 race gas. I know what the low octane pinging sounds like and this is not the case. I get about 3 pops at the top end of the track.
Thanks for your help!

I too mix 93 and 110,but I'm wondering about the quality of gas with the prices like they are. The reason being I was 3 tenths off yesterday vs. 2 weeks ago,and it was all in 60ft time. I normally go 1.71-1.73 and yesterday I finally got a 1.79 in MY last round(after 5 1.80-1.82's) and broke out, running 10.33 on a .35(1000ft track) we had a strong/steady wind of 17-22 mph but I wouldnt think that would affect 60ft.times...mph was down 1 which I would attribute to the wind, the barometer was 29.xx and falling, humidity was 80% +...my car runs better in cooler air,so I'm thinking I was a little rich yesterday.
