Well I was getting a little nosie from my torque converter so I check the bolts and one of them was lose and would not tighten. Come to find out the hole in the TC was stripped ( I don't think I did it, but I might have. What are the torque specs on the TC?) hence why it would not tighten down. I was using the original 1971 TC (purple) that came on the LS5/TH400 combo.

I know need another TC and would like some suggestions on the best one for my setup. Mainly a weekend driver / street rod.

I have....

1971 Chevelle
GM 454 HO (crate motor)
TH400 Auto
3.31 gears

Thanks,

AKM

A converter from a 70 Z/28 with a TH400 would be a good fit. I have used three of these, one in my 70 Z/28 and two others in different applications. I won't guess what the stall will be in your application because all combos are different and affect converters in different ways. It was about 3000 in the Z car.

Your best torque converters out there are ATI,TCI,NEAL CHANCE, AND SOME SAY COAN.

For your application probally a TCI or ATI street converter, priced from $200-$400

If I had to chose between between a ATI and any other it would be a ATI. I used one of these in my SS/IA camaro, bullit proof and worked great. They make a version of the converter used in the Z car I mentioned.

My 454 makes a bit more HP/TQ than a 454 HO and I have been running a B+M 2400 holeshot in my car...works perfect on the street and strip for the last 6 years with no issues.
FYI-I run 3.31 gears as well.Your throttle reponse will greatly improve with this convertor as well, even compared to the factory hi-stall (I used to run one as well)
