: Rusted hole found behind floor vent.
coles68 Nov 12th, 07, 3:25 AM I came across another suprise today while my son and I were working on his 68 Elky. After I removed the emergency brake and then the lower left plastic kick panel (to clean paint both) I saw that I had a rust through behind the area behind and below the vent. I found about a 2" long 1/2" wide hole and I could see through to the fender.
So, sense I'm new at all of this I need to know if I can remove the left front fender and get to where I need to repair this without removing everything. And how hard will it be to remove the left front fender? It looks like it's bolted on, am I correct?
MakMetalFab Nov 12th, 07, 8:14 AM you will need to remove the hood, and most of the nose, and then the fender.
vern Nov 12th, 07, 12:07 PM check out my thread on outer cowl panel repair. The pics might help you see whats going on in there.
trmnatr Nov 12th, 07, 12:15 PM They make a new cowl panel now. I would suggest having a body shop glue it in with the new body glue. It is stronger than a weld plus it doesnt thin the metal where you are welding or in this case bonding
In a class they took two pieces of metal that were bonded and welded, the welded one broke at the weld. The glued one broke the metal
The caulking gun from 3M for this glue is about $130. It is a double row caulking gun
coles68 Nov 12th, 07, 12:40 PM Thanks everyone. Vern, thanks for the pic's they will really help. I guess I will be taking some stuff off to see what damage is there.
MakMetalFab Nov 12th, 07, 6:48 PM Weld it. change the side or, patch it with one of my amazing patches!
tmcmillan5 Nov 12th, 07, 7:44 PM Hey Mike K, is your amazing patch for the Inside of the cowl, below the Vent or is it for the Outside nearer the lower fender???
Thanks, Tony

you've got a lot of different pieces of metal coming together at that spot. You might have a bit of a job once you get into it. Somehting to keep in mind if you don't have a lot of experience.
