A few guys told me a 30 over 454 with stock crank/ stroke would make a 460, I think the speed pro catelog said it would be a 461 under the pistons I bought. Which is it?

are we nitpicking Phil ??? Have you ever heard of rounding? Don't worry about it and get it running graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Haha, hey I know I KNOW! Just curious what the heck I have. It's actually a rounded off number isnt it. Ok, pretend I was never here ;) I get bored when im out of money and have no parts to put on.

Down to the nitty gritty, 461.023ci.

Hey Phil,

Neither,
With a stock crank....
454 .030 over = 460.3916
454 .060 over = 466.8683

On your other comment,
"I get bored when im out of money and have no parts to put on."

I'm out of money too, so I'm just using the charge card.....

If you guys really want to get technical, it actually depends on how accurate the crank was cut and if the rods were resized to exact length. Not to mention that a huge dome piston occupies combustion space and will yield less total available displacement.

460, 461 - whatever it takes....

Yes.

Bore squared x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders. Rod length and piston dome have nothing to with it.

Actually it boils down to the formula for a cylinder which is easy to remember if you figure that it is just the area of the bore multiplied by its height. The area of the bore is PIxR^2 which equals PIx(bore/2)^2. In this case(.030 over) it is:
3.14159(4.280/2)^2
or
3.14159(2.14)^2
or
3.14159(4.5796)=14.387
multiply this by the stroke (4.0")
14.387x4.0 = 57.5489
multiply this times the number of cylinders (8)
57.5489 x 8 = 460.3912cu in.
Of course, as Grn69Chv mentioned, this varies if all is not perfectly to spec.

so maybe i should start saying my 454 060 over is really a 466ci or 467 ci..........lol.......all these years i have called the 454 .030 over a 460 and .060 over 468.......lol

Yeah people always say what the hell is that then. Sometimes at gas stations when Id talk to people telling them I wanted to build a 496, or even my pop I told him I was building a "460" or 461... he was like, I didnt know chevy ever made a 460, blah blah... simple clear up... 454 30 over! or etc etc... 454 60 over, 4.25 crank... ahhh i wish ;) But yeah, it sounds cooler. And we can confuse the rice rocket generation even more.

Remember a 460 belongs over in the "Blue Oval" camp!! So don't get caught saying you have a 460...

He, He!!
