I was directed to this forum as the place to ask this question. Is there a book(s) on gm date codes to research the numbers on a potential vehicle purchase? Does the number stamped into the deck of an engine have corrosponding numbers with the vin? Thanks to all in advance.

Theres a variety of info ,both printed and on the net.
If you post your questions/info ,it'll probably be de-coded quicker here.
Here's where to find what you've asked for so far -post the codes and I'me sure you'll get info.

Paul, I agree with Mike and to add a "buyer beware" thought. The casting # is difficult to change or reproduce but the stamped codes are very often changed. You will need to look at many stampings to learn a fake from an original.
You can read books such as Alan Colvin's "Chevrolet by the Numbers", but it will not help you understand the differences from each assembly plant in the way they stamped their codes.
