: Guess my ET
Glenn Apr 21st, 04, 3:08 PM Had the chevelle chassy dyno done today.
310ft lbs at 3200rpm
270hp at 5000rpm and still climbing at the rear wheels.
What do you think it will do in the quarter?
'70 velle SS 396 street car, 3.73 12bolt, Th400, 2800 stall converter.
mr 4 speed Apr 21st, 04, 3:13 PM Mid-high 13's..maybe quicker..what are the engine specs?
blazerbob Apr 21st, 04, 5:05 PM Would agree with mid 13's with good traction of course. :D
Twilightoptics Apr 21st, 04, 6:34 PM With a 2.0 60ft and less horsies, I went 13.7@101.1
I concur. Mid-13s or quicker.
i don't think you can accurately guess the ET with chassis dyno numbers. there are too many different kinds of chassis dynos and too much variance in how the power is measured and what resistance they use to get the numbers.
so how much compression, what cam, intake, cylinder heads, carb, and about anything else you can tell us about the set up as a whole. like header size, exhaust size and type of mufflers, etc.
with the gears and stall you have it shouldn't take much of a 396/402 to run mid to low 13's without much problem.
Glenn Apr 21st, 04, 11:04 PM Here is the combination:
</font> 70 velle ss 396
TH400 2800 stall converter
402BBC 30 over 9.5 to 1 compression
stock heads rebuilt
comp cams roller rockers
edelbrock rpm cam
edelbrock air gap intake
holley 770 avenger carb
msd ignition
dynomax 1 7/8" headers
flowmaster 2 1/2" exhaust pipes
dynomax ultra flo mufflers
12 bolt 3.73 new clutches moser axles
boxed lower control arms w/polygraphite bushings</font> I know traction will be a problem. I'm thinking of getting BF Goodrich drag radials. What do you think of 295 50 15's on 15x8's with 4.5 b.s.?
I would also like to hear suggestions for new heads.
Thanks
ovelle Apr 22nd, 04, 4:11 AM either you have to much slippage in your converter or that dyno is screwy you should have more torque than 310 at the wheels kinda mild for a bbc
jmo
shane
mr 4 speed Apr 22nd, 04, 6:37 AM The 295/50/15 drag radials sound good to me and the backspacing too.
if you're buying new rims too, then i'd suggest 15x8 with 5.5" B/S and i would get a 275/60 D/R. i don't care for the RPM cam, but your combo sounds pretty decent to me, you should have no problem hitting low 13's, maybe a solid 12 sec ET with Drag Radials.
JRS70LS5 Apr 22nd, 04, 11:27 AM If you go with a 15x8=4.5 of back spacing,a 15x10=5.5 of back spacing!
69boo307 Apr 22nd, 04, 12:00 PM I think the dyno numbers usually are pretty accurate as far as predicting trap speed...for yours I'd guess around 101/102mph... As for ET though, I've seen cars run 14's at that speed, and seen cars run under 13 at that speed. The first 60 feet have an incredible amount to do with ET! Also the dyno curve, ie where the power comes in and how long it stays there smile.gif

Also the dyno curve, ie where the power comes in and how long it stays there smile.gif i would agree with that if it were an engine dyno, but chassis dynos can vary greatly. his for instance has VERY conservative numbers, IMO. 310 lb/ft of torque at 3200rpms with a 408ci engine and that much cam just doesn't add up to me. i would think the torque peak would be above 4000rpms and be significantly higher than 310 lbs, i would think it would be more like 380-400 lbs, IMO. but i haven't seen any other 402's on the chassis dyno before.
68chevelle533 Apr 22nd, 04, 6:14 PM I had a milder 396 engine in my 70 it ran 13.8s with less gear and stall in the houston summer heat. My guess (with traction) low 13s and solid 12s with tuning and more track time.
Glenn Apr 22nd, 04, 10:37 PM If this thing runs mid to low 13's, I'll be ecstatic graemlins/hurray.gif And if I'm in the 12's that would be perfect graemlins/thumbsup.gif I can't wait to get to the track. But first I'll have to get new rear rubber before anything else.
