: can I tell what metal my retainer is..
MadMarv Feb 14th, 04, 4:31 PM by looking at it?
I can't find a part number for retainers on the rebuild on the engine last year, which means I am guessing he reused the retainers that were on the engine from the first build 8 years ago.
If I pop the valve covers is there any way to tell what metal they are by looking at them? I need to know if I have titanium ones or not..

mc71454 Feb 14th, 04, 5:16 PM any titanium I have seen is shiny, even chrome looking.
jpete Feb 14th, 04, 5:25 PM I'm sure some one will correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't titanium non-magnetic? If so, one of those magnetic pick up tools should tell you. Probably without taking the VC off.

69LS1 Feb 14th, 04, 9:05 PM If they have anodized colors on the they may be aluminum retainers....ahem..... they used to be very popular....I ran them for several years way back when

Did you run the magnetic ones?? :D
You mean back when we didn't know any better & believed everything we read,,,,,,,& 400hp 350's were just a rebuild away with the latest widget &,,,,
Wait,,there seems to still be a lot of that going around,,never mind :D
69LS1 Feb 15th, 04, 12:00 AM Mike,
Ya , you know , back then you would start with a 350HP 327...add headers..those were worth 30hp...then add a big solid cam.. thats got to be worth another 50 HP...right ? then add a tunnel ram with two Holley 660 carbs that 1320CFM for 1320 feet right ?got to be worth another 40HP, then add
a magneto..thats worth 15HP ... then solid core wires
Packard 440 was the prefered brand....Roller rockers were worth another 20 HP... A pair of glasspacks had to be worth another 30HP and they made more noise and as you know more noise means more HP !! Cant forget the windage tray...thats worth another 6 HP....back off the wheel bearings alittle to free up another 5 HP and a fiberglass fan for another 5 HP....jeeze thats 550HP !! Hell this makeing HP is so EASY !!....Add a 15lb alum flywheel and 4.88's with a 3200 lb static Borg and Beck clutch..... FUN FUN !! tongue.gif
pdq67 Feb 15th, 04, 11:59 AM He, He!!
And ta this day, I'm a fan of Packard 440 wires!!
Love the static that play's through the radio!! Not ta mention the looks you would get from all the fancy car owners as you mess their sound systems up at a Stop-Light!!
Yes, that was the mindset way back when!! Just add up the Hp sum of all the hype!!
Geez, I gotta be careful or somebody might think I'm an Old-Fart??
pdq67
PS., and don't forget a "Kanuter Valve" is worth at least 12 more Hp too!!
