I am really into the 60s and 70s straight axle cars. Most lump these into the gasser catagory. I'm gathering parts to build a straight axle German Lloyd that was a street racer in the late 60s. This car will be street driven and it has a ton of history. Hell, it's a local legend around these parts.

Heres a gasser I saw at the last Super Chevy Show . I think there was a license plate at rear. I like the 55, 56, 57 Chevy gassers the best !!!!!

So, that's all that qualifies as a gasser, a straight axle?

I like them but wouldn't own one. I took this at the track a while back:

Just something about 55s and Willys done that way. I think they are cool.

I like them as long as the car was built before about 1964-1965...

Anything built after that looks rediculous in "gasser" style.

So, that's all that qualifies as a gasser, a straight axle?

Not exactly, but it is the defining characteristic. Like a pro street car is back halfed. A gasser should have a straight front axle, fender well headers, super skinny front tires with wider rear tires, but not steam roller back tires like pro streeter. Hilborn injection is way cool for the gasser vibe, too!:hurray:

Understand that gassers were built in 50's and 60's, so to be a true old school gasser, it should be built with that time period in mind. Billet aluminum and tweed interior are a huge no-no.

I wouldn't say the cut off on the year would be 65' tho. There's a pretty famous picture of a Dick Harrel Nova that's a 66 with a straight axle. If I knew how to post pictures here I would. I have a friend that did the straight axle treatment for a guy on a brand new Judge. He even had him wack the wheel wells! He drove it straight to the rod shop from the dealership.
Someone on this board has a survivor 66 Chevelle that has a straight axle. It's pretty sweet.
. I love those crazy looking rides.

Grew up with them, love em. One of my regrets is not buying a 50 Ford Coupe with a 401 Buick Nailhead, straight axle, fenderwell exit headers and Olds rearend in 1968. I think the guy wanted an out rageous $700 for it at the time. I built a 57 210 sedan instead.

What do you mean MEJ1990? You're freaking me out man......really. Show a pic of that slab sided Charger, I know I've seen some of those with the straight axle treatment. I saw a 67 Coronet R/T in a barn the other day. You would have liked that. The guy who bought it new showed me. He sold me a straight axle for my Lloyd.

three years ago, I JUST missed on buying a bbc powerd 55 Coupe. It had a chromed striaght axle and Olds rear. Green & white & clean & MEAN!
I test drove it, offered the dude 17 cash which was in my hands, he declined. The next day, the car ended it's auction on E-Bay. He told me the reserve was 19. It sold for 16.5 WHEN HE LOWERED THE RESERVE!!!!! Idiot!

You bet I would still have that car today if it were to be.

We used to draw the stripes and write "BADMAN" in the dust on my Dad's yellow '55 2-door sedan. Ahhh to be 5 years old again.

I had a 64 Falcon with a straight axle. Had a healthy 390 with a 4 speed and was a blast to drive. Was a bit of a bear keeping it in your lane going down the highway at 65 or 70 though! Had to trade it because my very preggers wife couldn't get in it too well! Wasn't really suited for a daily driver anyway!:D

Well I truly am sorry Mr. Perfect. Please excuse my tomfoolery as you can see I am just some dumb kid that doesn't know any better. And unfortunately there is no hope for me or any of this generation. As we are all doped up, alchoholic, gangsta wannabes that have no place in this society.

Slow down there, high-speed. I don't think he meant it like that. It's hard to tell sarcasm and voice inflection over the 'net. I think he was just teasin' ya' more than attacking you. No need to get all revved up over it.

I like the look on certain cars (especially 55 Chevys  ) but I can only imagine them driving like a 70s 3/4-ton 4x4 ...but worse with the ladder-bars and front skinnies. :o

That's a drop dead georgeous 55 Shannon. I was trying to build something along those lines a couple of years back but hit a major bump in the road and had to sell it. Selling that 55 hurt more than having to sell the family home a couple years later.

The gasser style is sweet looking. I have seen some cars built today that are a bit confused. A gasser should not have digital guages, leather seats, etc. The only real gassers feature nothing built after the mid 60's IMO or at least era correct. They are not some modern style street machine.

Hey Derek,
You know it does drive down the road nice. I can run @ 70mph, air on , and in 5th gear right down the interstate...no problem. The ride is actually good. The only time you have an issue is on uneven pavement. If the road surface is uneven, it will wonder a bit. I have a little different set up on mine than most, I have a center 7 leaf spring set-up with the hairpin stabilizer bars versus the double leaf spring. The rear is a 4 link with coilover shocks, and a 4 wheel disc brakes. Works out good. :)

Hey Driver,
This car isn't the one on Racingjunk as far as I know. I bought this car a few months ago from the owner that built the car from scratch. I had seen it at a cruise in earlier this year and it took me 3 months to track it down. Then it took me a couple of weeks and lots of $$$ to talk the guy into selling it. I don't have any plans of selling the car as of now, but you never you know what the future lies ahead. I will keep you in mind when that day comes. :)
