: Lowering my 70 Chevelle
Hi y'all
I'm trying to find the right set of springs so that I could get closer to mother earth, but not so far down that we'll meet.... I got a 396 BBC and want to see the tires align with the fenderarc both front and back, but whitout getting a saggy back.... What do you drive, and what do you recomend? Pic's will help;)
2cool Nov 9th, 07, 4:50 AM I cut 1 1/2 coils off my front springs and run 15 inch tires on the rear.
If I weren't afraid of cutting the tires I would do the same on the rear but you'll need shorter shocks in the back to keep the springs from falling out if you get a big rebound or something.
Elviss 1971 Nov 9th, 07, 6:44 AM I put Hotchkis lowering springs F/R on my Malibu when I rebuilt the front end. I have no bottoming issues and it rides a lot firmer than with the old original springs. They lower the car 1 inch below stock . I was wanting the same stance it had with the wore out springs , I ended up about 1/4 inch lower front and rear with just a small rake towards the front. I like the stance IMO.
ChevelleFan70 Nov 9th, 07, 5:24 PM I too put the Hotchkis springs on my '70 back in 2001 and have been very happy with the results. It's definitely lower than stock, but no bottoming issues. My car is a small block. I do have some rear tire rub issues, though, with stock 15x8 Corvette rally wheels and 255-60-15 tires. However, my 26 x 10.5 x 15 ET Streets on Wheel Vintiques repro 15x8 Rally wheels clear everything fine.
Front suspension has B-body spindles and Hotchkis upper A-arms, stock lower a-arms. Rear suspension is basically stock, except for the springs.

I am running 950/200 in my '68 w/ front adjusters all the way in (short as possible) w/ 2" drop spindle. Pics in sig
2cool Nov 11th, 07, 2:53 AM You have 11" springs in the rear?

Do you have pics of these on your car, by any chance? I'd love to see how they fit. My car's riding too low and I've been trying to decide how to fix it (going back to stock springs, etc.)... but these maybe look they will do the trick.
flink69SS Nov 12th, 07, 5:49 PM I just slapped in 2" drop Spindles with the stock springs in the front and Hotchlis 1" lowering springs in the rear. I think the rear actually dropped closer to 1 1/2".
It rides and handles awsome...

sorry, no pics. they sit on top of the spring just as pictured though. Adjust the sleeve on top to fine tune your ride height
70ss396_kid Nov 13th, 07, 3:07 PM 9.5" springs with adjusters up front, and 11" springs with late model f-body spring insulators on the back. Its a smidge too low for me I think. I'll probably put adjusters on the rear eventually and bring it up about an inch.

The site says you spot weld them... does that mean that they're only adjustable once? or does that refer to welding them to the spring pocket in the control arm?
By the way, the car look sweeeeeet.
darren@ridetech Nov 13th, 07, 3:55 PM Have you ever considered air suspension. This is fully deflated, ride height is about 3" above this.

ChaosEnvy Nov 13th, 07, 4:03 PM I have the adjusters mentioned above in the front. with 9.5" Front 11" Rear AFCO Springs. 950/200 Rates....

Dont spot weld them. then you can't adjust them..

I think maybe you should go a little lower. looks great

Thanks for the kind words. As mentioned before, no need to spot weld w/ the adjustable spacers.
70ss396_kid - car looks killer, love the wheels! Either come up 1" in back, or drop front, sounds like you'd be more comfortable going up
70ss396_kid Nov 14th, 07, 10:21 AM thanks guys. I absolutely love the way it sits from a visual standpoint, but I think its just a little too low to be practical for how much I drive it. The adjusters are bottomed out up front and its too close to the bumpstops with the crappy roads around here. I have to run too much shock to prevent bottoming out. I'm running 850/175 springs BTW.
I do have an sc&c stg. 2+ sitting in the garage, and I'm hoping the tall bjs give me that little of travel I'm looking for so I don't have to raise it too much.
