: My preparation to head to the track this SaT
blue66 Nov 7th, 07, 11:49 PM Well in preparation to go to the track this Sat. I ck'd out my front suspension. The control arms do move freely, so I put in a set of Moog 5230 6cyl springs. Had to cut 3/4 of a coil to get back to where I was at for ride height. Have had an extra 200 #'s on the nose for a week and got them to settle a little, another 1". I now have 5.5" of travel which is 1" more than I had before. Measuring from ground to fender opening at ride height and then jacking car up just to where I can move the tire still scrubbing on the concrete. What a difference in spring rate......Before 200#'s on the nose didn't do much , now it will lower the car another 2" just about to the bump stops. I only have my 3 way adjustables which I can't tell how to set, or a difference in any setting's so I just put on my cheapy street shocks and am going to see what happens.
While the front was apart I took the caliper bolt slides apart cleaned, polished, and lubed them so the calipers no longer drag and slide nice and easy.
I also made a set of 3"x 18" collector extensions.
Harold S. has said his sons car picked up .2 and 2mph with them.....so I am going to do a back to back test without and with. I don't know if there is any "hook" left in my slicks, but I'm gonna give it one more try this year to hit the 9 sec club :D
Next year I will have new slicks and some 10" wheels. And new front shocks. I did measure what I have, and have an 11.5" section width using a straight edge across the sidewalls (28x10.50 on 8" rim). I have 1" of clearance on both sides with my wheels/tires. I might want to try the new Hoosier Dot radials. I know I could run the 275/60's, maybe I could squeeze the 325/50's like Todd G. is using? Depends how close the section width on Hoosiers site is to actual real life measurements. Either that or go back to a 30" tall tire.
So that is what I have been doing the last few days.
Hopefully I will see some improvements.
:beers:
Searching for that 9.xx.......Brian
Bob West Nov 8th, 07, 12:01 AM Good luck
FourEightyNine Nov 8th, 07, 12:05 AM What converter/ gearing are you running? Do you have the front sway bar hooked up?
Good luck this weekend, I wish my track was open.

9.5" Edge 4500, 4.10gears.
fabio Nov 8th, 07, 12:22 AM what's the purpose of the 6 cylinder springs? Seems quite a few are using them.
JOHN WILSON Nov 8th, 07, 12:33 AM I now have 5.5" of travel which is 1" more than I had before.

I always had a hard time adjusting my CE shocks. I would push and pull on it by hand and try to tell which position it was in. What was so frustrating was never being 100% sure I had both sides adjusted the same.
Hope those slicks have 1 round left in them. Keep us posted!
Harold Sutton Nov 8th, 07, 12:35 AM New tires would probably help you use any torque you might gain from the collector extensions. Anybody you know have a good set you might borrow for 1 or 2 passes? You're still running E.T. streets or street radials right now, aren't you? I also think a good set of AFCO double adjustables would help the front end lift. Have you removed the front sway bar? That helps lift if you haven't already done it. From the trap speed it appears you have about a 10.05-10.08 E.T. in there right now. A little better air and who knows. You'all are about into winter right now, aren't you?
FourEightyNine Nov 8th, 07, 12:51 AM I have those 3 way CE shocks in mine, seemed pretty straight forward. Maybe because they were brand new? Taking off the front sway bar definitely helped the front end lift, to the extent it pulled the tire off the ground.
I would think that you should be in the 1.40X 60ft range maybe high 1.3Xs. Get that goin for yah and 9s for sure.

Harold, I have ET Drags on it, but of course they were used up when I got them :( They were free....had half the rubber left on them but came off another full weight low 10sec car, so I'm sure the sidewalls were junk when I got them. Plus they were a yr old when I put them on.
I plan on upgrading the front shocks over winter, and do have the sway bar removed in the front.
Winter Yes.....it snowed last night:mad: Supposed to be mid 50's this weekend though. After this weekend the car will be done for the year.

How do you know what position they are in?........Compress and turn, you can feel them click, but I pull and push and it doesn't seem to make much difference. And then to try and tell if both are the same?
I agree, the car should be 60fting at least a 1.40.
10secBu Nov 8th, 07, 9:12 AM Sounds like your on your way. The front end travel you have should work well assuming that's a measurement of extension travel from ride height to where the front tires barely touch.
A 325/50 M/T ET Radial on a 9.5" rim has a 13" section width. The Hoosier version (DOT D/R) in the same size measures 13 3/16" on the same rim.

More stored energy for better weight transfer.

Thanks Todd, yes the ride height was measured from the floor to fender opening, and then again when the tires would just scrub on the floor.
And thanks again for measuring the tires. :beers:

Ron454 Nov 8th, 07, 7:12 PM Hey,
Good luck!
Have fun!

Harold Sutton Nov 9th, 07, 1:25 AM You have a good methodical way of testing, hope your weekend goes as planned and the track has enough bite to give you at least a couple of good runs. I'd say a mid to low 1.40 sixty foots are about average for a car running what your's does right now. The best 60' my son's car got at that stage was a 1.389 on the 9.98 run. Most were right between 1.40-1.45.
40Coupe Nov 9th, 07, 7:44 AM Good luck. I ran a 9.99 @ 133.
blue66 Nov 9th, 07, 5:22 PM Thanks guys......I'll keep ya posted!!
Harold Sutton Nov 10th, 07, 1:17 AM Good luck. I ran a 9.99 @ 133. A early model Camaro is 10 H.P. more aerodynamic than a Chevelle at about 130 MPH. It gets farther apart as the speed increases.
67Mike Nov 11th, 07, 4:32 PM We are waiting on your results Brian.
