: Question about running radials in back and bias ply in front
Adrian D. Nov 7th, 07, 12:12 PM Hello all,
I am going to be running MT ET street radials for rears.
For the fronts, I would like to put on MT Sportsmen skinny tires. However, these are bias ply.
My driving is going to be 80-90% street, 10-20% strip.
I won't be doing any interstate driving (4.56 gears).
Is it a complete no-no to run mixed tires like this?
Thanks,
Adrian
64CDNSS Nov 7th, 07, 12:30 PM Here in Ontario it is illegal. Listed in the Highway Traffic Act as a no-no.
In a straight line, no problem, but radials and bias plys have different slip angles and the car will behave poorly when turning at speed.
It is easy to find skinny radials so play it safe and avoid mixing tire types.

I had BF Goodrich T/A's on the rear (of course there was so little tread they may as well have been slicks! ;)) and MT Sportsmen 15 x 5 up front. I danced a jig the day I got rid of those skinnies for street use! I don't think I ever took a turn at more than 20 mph.
Chris Stanwyck Nov 7th, 07, 1:01 PM Tried it once at the track, got outa the groove and almost killed myself. Super scary.
Car was very difficult to run true all that day at the track. Changed it back up the next time and the car went straight as an arrow.
I was not running skinnies up front and that would have helped some?
1966_L78 Nov 7th, 07, 2:02 PM Along time ago, I worked at SuperShops... If radials and Bias-ply were mixed on the same car, the radials HAD TO go on the FRONT... Too much liability otherwise...
huffhuff Nov 7th, 07, 2:28 PM no manufacturer endorses mixing. uniroyal states that if you MUST then the radials go on the rear. i've had radials on the front and biased on the rear when i had a 68 charger R/T. was a real squirrel to drive.
davoaz Nov 7th, 07, 6:06 PM HAd a friend who mixed his tires once. He wised up after we got on the freeway and wound up faceing the wrong way after trying to change lanes and catching the pavement joints.
kirkwoodken Nov 7th, 07, 6:12 PM My father tried radials on the back only! Don't do it.
70 beater Nov 9th, 07, 8:56 PM I'm guilty of this, radial front/bias back.Made the car handle nervous.I've got a question now,I have a new set of bias ply frontrunners, not mounted yet, what is a good legal bias ply rear street tire?I've run dirt tires on the rear with good results, just don't like the "not legal for highway use" stamped all over them.
69-CHVL Nov 9th, 07, 10:14 PM So you guys think that's its dangerous to run radials in the front and bias in the rear? Just got my ET street and noticed that car seems to float and wander...but I figured this was due to the 20psi in the rear.
???????
Bob West Nov 9th, 07, 10:54 PM I run radial slicks with MT fronts and never had any issues, car always went straight...well...until the suspension broke. I think just the fact of having skinnies up front effect handling on the street, you dont want to take a corner very fast anyways.

Whats not illegal here?
Technically with the new adminisrative law "they" can confiscate the car over running mickeys period.
Some people mix and get away with it, and some dont.
70 beater Nov 9th, 07, 11:15 PM When I would drive on the highway, the rear would sway side to side,I guess sidewall deflection.Worse with the front sway bar off,no rear bar.I never had a problem, just the rear movement gave me an uneasy feeling.Side note, that set up drove real well in the ice.165r15 front radial,Hoosier dirt/asphalt 26.5x7x15 (I think) rear.Thinking about getting more dirt rears if I can't find something else, just don't want to get in trouble.
JOHN WILSON Nov 10th, 07, 7:21 AM I have 2 sets of front tires. Hoosier bias/pizza cutters and a radial 205/60 on another set draglites. The car goes down the track the same with both sets and the radial slick out back. No issues keeping the car straight, but I would not run the pizza cutters on the street. It would be real easy to push right through them in a turn, regardless of what tire is out back. The fact I run a spool makes it even worse.
bracketchev1221 Nov 10th, 07, 9:41 AM I ran the 26" sportsmans on the front of my Malibu, with 255/60 radials on the rear. Granted the car was no road racer, and if you didn't drive it that way it was fine.
Chris Stanwyck Nov 10th, 07, 9:51 AM Put on some 205/75 Hercules radials up front this year. Don't know of another company that sells tires in that size.
They are a thin tall tire that moves the car well at the track and on the street.
creeper72 Nov 10th, 07, 10:05 AM I run et. streets in rear with radials up front no troubles at track or street yet. I drive 45- 60 on back roads.
