Just recently joined the group in hopes of learning a little more about the older chevelles and there values.I am almost 50 and my first car was a 69 ss and 32 yrs later i feel the need to purchase a hobby car similar to the one i used to own.looking for something that wont lose money in the long haul. Not sure if these cars hold there value or not.I have found a real nice 1972 chevelle ss with 33,000 original miles and all documentation, window sticker build sheet ect.Car is a 350 with an automatic Gauge pkg ,buckets.i think i can get the car for 23.500.Does this sound good? Will this car increase in value. Also found a 1971 402 almost original car for the same price.Does this sound high or a good price.Should i continue to look at the 68-69 yrs? Any advice would be great.

John,

My opinion is the seller of the 72 is asking too much. 33,000 miles doesn't do much for me. I think a nice driver should be $12K to $15 (needs to be something special). Is the 71 as nice as the 72? Does it have documentation? I tend to lean more towards the 71 if it has documentation and is as nice.

72 SS with a small block......not a good buy for 23,000 or as an investment

If the price and condition are close, I'd take the BB car since value will be/go higher.

high for both cars , What do you mean by the 71 is "almost original"

Good point. hard to judge a car without pictures, harder still without alot of details, and almost impossible in this case...

Just how "original" can affect the value of the car considerably... Especially on an SS...

i feel the need to purchase a hobby car similar to the one i used to own.looking for something that wont lose money in the long haul. Not sure if these cars hold there value or not.

So things you need to think about;

Does it have to be original? Stock? would a tribute/clone be sufficient?

What are your intensions; driver (cruisin' and bangin' gears), show winner ("stock" or modified?), or "investment" (rarely on the public roads)?

Honestly, nothing wrong with tributes/clones from a value standpoint, as they tend to hold their values; often a lower "buy-in" but then a lower "return", but appreciation of the investment is probably similar...

If you plan to cruise the car alot, it MIGHT be the way to go... IMO, often alot better, because you can upgrade the car (comfort and performance) without potentially harming the value...

Its becoming more about the condition and quality of the car, rather than pure history or provenance...

If you are trying to recreate feelings from the past, might be best to look for that particular year (1969)... Take your time... If you want something todrive and enjoy, without alot of work and time spent, then obviously, an already built and finished (or near finished) car is probably the best bet. Probably also the best value, as long as you can determine the quality...

As far as holding their value... Its impossible to say... Most people seem to think they will continue to appreciate in value, but maybe level off somewhat...

I tend to be pessimistic, and feel we are probably due for a drop... Prices already seem to be softening a bit on average cars. I think you are getting to a point (or already passed it) when average guys can't afford average cars. With the general economy questionable, then likely that more people will sit back and wait (dropping prices). I also think the housing/mortgage situation is a major factor, again, because the average guy could refinance his home and pull a little more out for that "dream car". I think those days are mostly over... is it a bubble? Who knows. I just think they will come back to a more realistic price.

Long term, IF you don't over pay, and are dilegent in shopping for quality, then you should probably do okay...

John,

As a correction to my earlier opinion regarding the 72, I missed the SS. I would say the $16K to $19K area. I originally took it as a malibu.

Sorry

The car is nice for sure but you do need to slow down. Figure out exactly what you want to buy and what you want to spend. Then find what fits in that criteria before you buy a car.
