Well, I intend to build a very similar engine to your's, 383 SBC, 6" rods, 210 AFRs, a 750, etc.
I am going to use a SB288/296R9 in it, but I have a problem.
Someone who bought the same cam grind from me earlier, called me today. His engine has the 195 AFRs, and 5.7 rods, and when they got on it this weekend, it SPUN the rims inside the tires.....
Hmmmmm, back to the old drawing board.....
A SB285/295R10 will go for years, and it is 249/259 at .050, .556/.556 valve lift, and woorks with 1.6s at .593, and a 110 LSA.
I've made over 460 BHP in 1982 with Turbo heads and 9.2:1 CR.....
I've got both a 285/295R10, and a 287/295R8, both at .582/.582 valve lift, and daily drivers.
The SB288/296R9 is as big as I recommend, and is 255/263 at .050, .626/.626 valve lift, and 109 LSA. The valve timing at 102 ICL is IVO 39° BTDC IVC 69° ABDC EVO 81° BBDC EVC 35° ATDC. The 288/296R is the most popular, and has won the most races, of any SBC roller that I have made for 23 years.
I have an Olds racer, Joe Mahan, who has a 3670 lb 442, and a 9.8 CR 455+060 Olds, 1 7/8 headers, 3000 SS, and 4.10 rear. He uses the Olds 288/296R9, with 1.6s for .668/.668 lift, put in on 102, as I recommend. At Norwalk last year, he ran some 10.91s, launching at 1200 to avoid boiling his 3-year old slicks.....

let me know....

UDHAROLD,
I have a few questions for you if i can pick your brain a lil. First of I have a 383 sbc in a 1966 Chevelle, it is 9.8:1, i am running Dart Iron Eagal heads that are 2.02/1.6o and they are 200 cc intake runners. I have a eldelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap manifold and a 750 Vac Secondary Holley carb with front and rear metering blocks. I have a MSD 6 AL box and a GM HEI distributor that has been worked so it does its job. I don't remember if it is a 5.7 or 6.0 inch motor. I made a not so great choice and bought the 383 kit from summit and probably could have gone a different route and been a lil happier. The car has a 700r4 trans and 4:11's in the 12 bolt. Anyway the cam i am runing is a 230@.50 Lunati, It's just a simple hydralic street cam, the gross lift id .480. I don't know a whole lot about it other than that.
Here is my delima... I want a hydraolic roller for the street that is capable of being driven on the weekends and to a cruise night here, and maybe even on a Hot Rod Power Tour someday... maybe. But at the same time I want a more aggressive cam that is capable of getting my car to run 12's or so without a lot of trouble. Am I asking too much? Ok i did not build the motor myself and i was told by my mechanic that he had to grind the rods down a lil bit just to get the small .480 lift cam i have in it and that anything bigger would not fit... well at the time i was ok with that because i was driving the car daily and didn't really need anything more. Now i want more and I don't know what cam to use to do it.

WOW!!!!! SORRY for the half post... somehow i sent off the post on accident lol ...

Well back to my lil story. SO after all that here is the meat of the question:
Do I need a small base circle cam for my motor to go bigger?
If so what do you recomend?
Can you give me the reason behind why my cam almost didn't fit?
Heck i want to know everything lol ... Just kidding.
SOrry for the long drawn out question any info you can give me would be great.

Thanks in advance for any info,

Greg
