: tool to remove windshield trim clips?
66dream Nov 6th, 07, 10:06 AM Can anyone please tell me what type of tool I can use to remove my winshield and rear window clips that hold the trim on?
I want to take the clips off so I can sand & paint in that area, then reinstall them.
thanks in advance for the help.

alabamad Nov 6th, 07, 11:33 AM Go to an auto parts store. They should have one-they make several variations but mine looks like a wish bone with a handle. Slide it inder the trim and a little torque at the right spot and off they come.
ktrim Nov 6th, 07, 12:45 PM I use a 90* pick, slide it between the class and molding, hook the clip, pull a bit and it will relase the molding
66dream Nov 6th, 07, 1:24 PM Thanks but, I'm looking for a tool to remove the clips of the windshield from the little studs.
Not trying to be a smart-ass, but did you try some pliers? they should slide down off the stub and then pull straight off.
matt60j Nov 6th, 07, 2:38 PM Heres what I used. A putty knife that I filed the end a bit.

Slip under moulding to catch back of clip and rotate slightly.

No tool needed, they slide on and off the stud.
Bryan59EC Nov 6th, 07, 8:06 PM 66 A-pillar and a couple of lowers are retained with screws
May require windshield removal to get to them

Mine do not just "slide of the stud".
I tried the removal tool and was able to get one of the clips off but, I very nervous about maybe breaking my new glass.
I just want to remove these to paint the car. Do you think I should leave them on when painting the car?
Cameano Nov 6th, 07, 9:26 PM If they're stuck, sometimes a screwdriver and a good whack to it will pop them loose. If not, needlenose pliers, break them off, and buy some new ones.
davis95 Nov 6th, 07, 9:27 PM I had my car painted 15 years ago and didn't remove mine and the integrity of the clip areas is still as good as new. It really all depends on the condition of the clip area on your car. One strong tip is to use epoxy primer before applying your paint.
KentJ Nov 7th, 07, 2:48 PM I just got under mine with a flat screwdriver, and it popped them off. Pulled a bit on the trim to lift it away from the body so I could see where the clips were, then just pushed on them with the driver blade. Popped them off the studs.
they can be a real pain ...especially the ones shown above, especially with the glass in.
btw, as far as i know, and, i could be mistaken, those are not the correct clips for most older chevelles and el caminos, those are the generic (one size fits all gm type)... the correct (and much better ones, imo) are longish ones that you simply push to the side to remove, theres a model for front and a model for rear of most el camino glass, including, i believe, 68 thru 72 elco's.
i use a needle nose and a small screwdriver when i need to remove those w/glass installed....and then i install the other ones.
