What cams would you guys rec. for a high revving 450rwhp 454 daily driver with MPFI?

This will be a custom engine; DART block, Edlebrock Heads, Eagle Crank, etc I definetly want a lopey idle, i don't care about comfort i'm just not sure what I should get and have good vacuum for my setup.

lopey idle

good vacuum

Pick one. Whichever one you get, you won't get the other.

Which is more important?

Look at a Crower 01404.

Why go with an aftermarket block if you only want 450 rwhp from a 454?

Money could be better spent building a 496 out of a regular GM casting, IMO.

I could always go for more ponies later, right now though going from a 115fwhp car to a 450rwhp car should be a big enough jump.

RB69SS396Conv, are you sure about that model number. Google returned like 5 pages and Summit had them but didn't have a pic or any specs on them.

If you want that bad mofo lopey head turning sound, then a 454 with 84 degrees of adv overlap will "git 'er done" for you, but forget having decent vacuum. Here's how to calculate your advertised overlap:

Add your intake and exhaust advertised duration (duration at .050 will not give you the correct overlap)

Divide that answer by 4

Subtract the lobe seperation angle (LSA) from that answer

Multiply that answer by 2, and you have it!

But be careful what you wish for, you may not like a cam with that much overlap, if you drive it a lot on the street. This would be for hardcore gearheads only.

If your MPFI system is speed density, be careful not to drop too low on the vacuum... Which system are you using.

You can lop and stop at the same time!!!!

Theres a brake booster on the market that needs no vac(hooks up to the power steering pump).....so you can stop, and still lop good. I'm trying to locate it for ya'. I think it also has a secondary vac built in....I know its only around $400 bucks but I have to remember were I saw it.

Check this site...its close to what I'm talkin about.

Pretty sure... I could be wrong though....

p 48 of the catalog, p 47 of the file.

Sometimes it's better to just go straight to the source, especially when you already know what it is (Crower, in this case), and not take the detour of a "search". ;)

a high revving ...daily driver?

CJ, I strongly suggest you rethink your build/plans. For a daily driver you spend a very minimal amount of time at high revs, and you will get sick of the lopey idle in a hurry. A very wise man named Lingenfelter (sp?) once said, build your engine to be strong in the RPM range it will see most of it's time in. Of course he's not the only one to say this, but he's the only big name I could combine with the saying. This same man built some strong running engines that had smooth to stock sounding idles. I know you said you don't care about comfort, but that doesn't make sense when you're talking about a daily driver.

Why go with an aftermarket block if you only want 450 rwhp from a 454?

I have to agree here, if you're getting a Dart block, obviously money's not much of an issue, you could build a monster engine out of it. That way you could easily pass up your 450 RWHP and do it at a daily driver RPM range. Keep the idle decent to smooth and put good mufflers on it. It will still sound mean.

Have you considered gas milage, how many miles will you be driving daily? High revving big blocks do not equal good gas milage, even with FI.

You can still get more ponies out of a good GM block.

Here's a thought - stroke it to 496 and slap a procharger on it.
