: swappable exhaust? Suggestions for street/strip...

I just sold off my 1-chamber Flows, cuz I was just sick of the sound, plain and simple. graemlins/sad.gif

I happened to start the car up earlier tonight with open headers. It sounded so GOOD! :D  I had forgotten how great it idled and never realized how much of that good "cackle and crackle" that the 1-chamber Flows had absorbed. :(

My '70 is about 80%strip/20%street. Maybe the occasional drive to work, but mostly it gets driven to the track and raced.

I was thinking about doing a couple of different things. I'd like to try a set of Dynomax Bullets (yes, I know they are supposed to be loud) for when I'm feelin a bit "naughty". But, I'd also like to be able to have it "relatively" quiet when need be.

Would it be feasible to run the Bullets with bolt-on flanges on the ends of them, then a set of Dynomax Super Turbos (or something like cheap)downstream from them?

Basically I could run 4 mufflers to keep it quiet on the street or to work and if I wanted to "play" or go racing, I could unbolt the 2nd set of mufflers and run the Bullets only.

This is on my 355cid. The exhaust currently consists of 1 3/4" Hooker Super Comp headers going to 3" exhaust. It currently dumps in front of the rear axle, and I'd like to keep it right there.

Am I crazy? Anyone else do this? Any suggestions or things I'm not thinkin of? Thanks! smile.gif

you could run a set of electric cutouts right after the headers, having them normally route through the full exhaust, and then filp a switch to have them dump straight to a short pipe with bullets.

if you do the idea you're speaking of above, those pipes will be pretty hot if you want to pull off the pipes after the engine has been running. you'll need to crawl under the car to get em off most likely. also, where are you going to keep the disassembled pipes? imo, it would be easier, cleaner, and definetely cooler to route via electric cutouts.

Have 3 bolt flanges on everything, and just use stainless hardware, swap them when you want.

Thats how i'm building mine, for quick and easy testing.

Matt, I ran a set of old-style cutouts that used the cables several years ago. I know what you mean about hot pipes. graemlins/angry.gif That's cuz they didn't work very well and I had to manually tie the flap in the exhaust, open or closed, depending on the situation. At that time, the car was my real daily driver.

However, since the cars duties have changed, I was thinkin about doing it along the lines of what Brian is trying. I'd like to flange everything and be able to swap stuff off and on according to where I'm at. Since it's just a pair of mufflers, they should fit in the trunk for a backroads cruise, or in a buddies truckbed at the track.

When I get to the track, I usually have about 20 minutes of car prep to do and another 15-20 min. of surveying the scene and talking to my fellow racing buddies. Hopefully, that would give my mufflers a chance to cool off after the drive over, for removal. As far as leaving, I usually hang around a while after my class finishes up, so that let them cool down again.

Brian, are you planning to run more than 1 set of mufflers, or just brand-testing one at a time? Any more details about your exhaust setup? BTW, what muffs does Ed use?

I don't really know anyone doing this, but since it crossed MY mind....surely someone else is doin' it. graemlins/clonk.gif :D

I believe Ed is using 3" mandrel bent pipe,X pipe, and Dynomax ultraflo welded turbos with dumps. And thats how he races it,thru the pipes.

I plan to build several different intermediate pipes, the Dynomax mufflers are tried and true, Ed did very extensive testing and found them to be the best working full sized (quiet) mufflers, although i may switch to a stainless muffler in a few seasons.
I will be using 3" Dynomax ultraflo mufflers (one set), no tail pipes.

I'm pretty sure Ed uses a 3-1/2" mid pipe and X-pipe to the mufflers. It wasnt worth any ET/MPH over the 3".

marty use a ford idea it works very well and is easy to change it is the ball and cup flanges .it uses a two bolt flange and there are no leaks.i run the bullets on my drag car and i wish i would have saved the money and just ran pipes out from under the car
