Right now I have a 69 442 Olds with a 455 rocket thats being fixed up. Haven't got a chance to drive it yet and i've never been in a car thats packed a punch yet. The 455 is bored .030 over to a 461 and thats it. It has a turbo 400 tranny and 3.42 posi with 28 by 12 rear tires. The car is pretty much stock. I can't wait to take it out and burn some rubber, but i'm curious...is the car able to do a smokin burnout? I plan to do the brake and gas method, but could this destroy the drive train or will it survive the occasional smoke show?? If i really pushed the engine hard, and shifted at exactly the right rpm what would an estimate be on the best 1/4 time? It produces roughly 400hp@5600rpm and 500 ftlbs. of torque@3600rpm. The olds weighs approx. 3600 lbs. Could it beat a 67 Camaro with a 402 bored .010 over with a turbo 400 tranny and 3.93 gear with 28 inch tires?

Thanks again once more
Pete

It should be OK for burnouts, but may have wheel-hop which is remedied by SSM lift-bars.
The best thing is to put it in D-1 or 2 and put on brakes, but this is not good for brake pads!!
Your car would prolly run about low 14's or high 13's with slicks

Pete, Those Olds 442's could do a awesome burnout without any mods, they are torque monsters.

Hey Horsepower69, I am getting ready to build a 455 Rocket to stuff in my 70 Chevelle , I get alot of crap from friends but this engine has been in my familly sence it was new in a 73 Custom Cruser and it has more meaning to me then a 454 Chevy which must be gold plated for the prices I am seeing , anyways ,, I have done lots of reserch on 455 Olds engines and here is what I have learned ... No! Olds engines do not have weak bottom ends as I have heard for years ,, they are VERY strong ,, they just have poor oiling ,, you NEED to have oil restrictors installed to choke down the oil supply to the top end also you need a 7 Qt. oil pan minimum ,, I have heard something about cross drilling the crank to help oil disribution ,, Im sure the restrictors and 7 Qt. or more pan would be good enough.. ,, Good luck http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

About the worst thing about the olds engines is the non-adjustable valve trains. Most of the newer cams have a lot of lift and may need adjustable pushrods. Take a look at www.442.com (http://www.442.com) and see what Mondello recommends. He has been the God for Olds for years. The Olds is an easy engine to work on also. Just don't break your back putting on the cast iron intake, it's big enough for a family of four to sled on.

Pete,

If you ever want to sell that car say the word. The fastest car in the town (Rehoboth Beach,De) was a 442, 455 W-30 CAM, 4-speed Hurst.....OH YEAH!! Don't remember alot of smoke burn outs, but we smoked nearly every body we raced. Chirped in every gear. HAVE FUN!!

If you put at least a 2500 rpm stall converter behind it, you won't need to power brake it to do burn outs- You floor it from a standstill and that thing should light them up no problem!

Pete DO NOT CALL MONDELLO!!!! Trust me on this one

Go over to realoldspower.com and the boys there will be able to help you out with any question you have regards to your car. The Olds is a great engine but like all BOP products they have their challenges. I've been playing around with my Olds for about five years and I've learned tons from the guys over at ROP and boards like this one. One piece of advice I like to give to newbies....ask lots of questions but narrow it down to one knowledgable person, if not you'll get a different answer from everyone you ask. Shoot if you have any questions drop me a line graemlins/thumbsup.gif
