: Dash replacement
1969 SS hugger Nov 2nd, 07, 8:51 AM I am looking to buy an aftermarket dash housing. I see that some come with silver painted accents and some with chrome. What is the correct dash for a 69 SS and which company should i avoid or use. I have seen a few different kinds on Ground up, Ausley's, and NPD.
I Want to get the best replacement without having to go NOS.
Thanks for the info..
Jack
69396ss Nov 2nd, 07, 8:56 AM I ordered mine from Ground-up and think your best doing that. If you want to go absolutely correct you could send the piece off for Chroming, but even though it would be a dramatic detail, I'm sure the cost would approach restoring an original.
Some guys will be able to easily spot a reproduction by grain depth of the dash, but for a local show application, I think they're just fine for fit and finish.
It all depends on what you want to accomplish with your car.
pborsari Nov 2nd, 07, 9:43 AM I put a new one in a few months ago (I bought it over a year ago)--it took a little bit of persuasion to get it in, but it did go in and looks beautiful--especially if you change out the clear plastic in front of the gauges.
1969 SS hugger Nov 2nd, 07, 10:49 AM so originally ...was the trim chrome or painted silver?
69396ss Nov 2nd, 07, 10:53 AM Chrome.... Admitedly, it would be pretty dynamic, but somewhat costly.

No i don't think you understand...the trim was plastic chrome plated...i see both painted silver and chrome plastic for sale in repos...what was original?
69396ss Nov 2nd, 07, 12:15 PM Chrome was original. But there has been discussion as to whether the Chrome plating was exclusive, or if some were originally painted.
I think the Chrome Plating is considered correct, (although variations are possible)
I have never seen correct Chrome trim re-pops for sale, however.
I've only seen the vacuum Chroming process discussed as an aftermarket service.
1969 SS hugger Nov 2nd, 07, 12:21 PM humm...so Ausleys who has the chrome versions of the repo dash insert...these would be bad? I really like the chrome version over the painted silver. I saw these at Carlise and liked them but don't know if the fit would be O.K
greg5436 Nov 2nd, 07, 12:29 PM you want the chrome one.at first you could only get a painted silver one. now every dash is chromed then painted black.get the one from ausleys it is what you need. also the one from ground up has the correct chrome plating. greg

When did this change?
I bought a reproduction dash from them last year with no Chrome Plating on it.
That's dissapointing.
obseSSed Nov 2nd, 07, 4:17 PM I looked at one that James Hinshaw had at the Northern Regional....Very nice!! It was trimmed with the chrome which he said was correct. My factory one was also chrome, but I have since trimmed it with silver because the chrome has worn off. I think his price was 179.00. I almost bought it then, but I didn't have the extra cash. He also said it was a perfect fit, although you had to trim off a couple of plastic tabs on the back...I assume they are from the molding process. I'll be getting mine this winter. :beers:
Mikeys69 Nov 2nd, 07, 6:59 PM I bought my unit from OPGI....Now I can't install the under steering piece.
It don't fit....
SKsvelle Nov 2nd, 07, 7:50 PM Try Big Tony's chevelle parts, i just bought a dash for my 71. Silver is the correct accent. They had the vents installed with the dash and it went for 80 bucks cheaper than everyone else.

I read somewhere on here that was a common problem and that they would have to be trimmed a little to make it fit.
Chrome one at Ausleys for 149.00 1-800 228 7539
ACES-70 Nov 3rd, 07, 8:23 PM Ive installed several and have had no fit issues
jtm71 Nov 3rd, 07, 10:42 PM i installed one..got it from NPD I think..it has the chrome, not painted silver.
I definitely had to do some trimming on the back..it had a bunch of plastic 'tits' that were interfering with a good fit. it was a bit of a PIA, but it came out great.
I totally agree with the comment above about the gauges/gauge lenses...spend time making them look pretty. now that it is all back together, it is very nice. a worthwhile project.
