Tomorrow I`m going to look at a pair of 062 casting vortec heads. They are suppost to be from a 1999 motor and had about 67k miles on them. Is there anything I need to know or look out for when looking at these heads? i don`t know what i would do with htem if I got them but the guy is only asking $150 and I can probably get them for a little less so I figured I would pick them up and store them away.

look for cracks in the combustion chambers around the ex valve and also under the seat on the ex. That's the main area I have seen crack. If the engine was overheated you can bet the heads are cracked. That's a smoken deal, ask the guy if he will return your money if the machine shop finds cracks. Get that in writting.

go to nastyZ28.com in the engine thread these a sticky about vortec heads. I just bought complete top end package from a freind of a friend. turns out you need to do a little work to them to run a decent cam. Jim

Thanks guys. I apprecieate the info. jim is that the thread this is like 25 pages long? I tried twice to go through it but only got through like 5 pages before I got antsy. Most of the replies were similar. I know that you need to machine the guides to run higher lift cams and if I go this route then I will have them done correctly. I just wasn`t sure what to look for as far as anything that would stand out at a "do not buy" red flag. Since talkng to the guy about them and reading a bunch of posts about them, I have thought up a pretty decent combo, I think anyway. If the price wasn`t so good I would`nt even think about it. Anyway, thanks again guys.

by the time you get the vortec's cut for higher lift cam & screw in studs & the pushrod holes opened up & the guide plates installed .......... not to say anything about the crumby sealing on the intake manifold ........ Darts of AFR's aren't such a bad deal after all :D IMO

I can`t see the vortecs costing as much as AFR heads by the time I have them set up right but for what I plan to use them for I don`t need Dart or AFR heads. I`m planning to use them for a truck motor. They are either going to go on a 327 I`m getting from my buddy which is basicaly a 300hp motor with a.465 lift Isky cam, It has worn out camael humps on it now, or probably a mild 350 for the steet built for low speed power.

vortec heads are very good heads flow around 240cfm and are very cheap

i thikn you can get a set ready to bolt on with the right springs for around $450 a set cant beat that

if you are not making over 500hp i wouldnt be to worried about pressed in studs

if you are looking for a set already to go pm me i have a dirt track guy who has several sets of these and if there not already to go he can get you a very good deal.............

for anyone who doesnt thinkj these are good heads

we made over 450hp with a two barrel with these heads!

well I picked them up tonight. I offered the guy $100 and he took it. I didn`t see any visible cracks but I`m going to take them down on Monday and have them magged and maybe pressure tested. The only bad thing I saw was a exhaust bolt broke off flush but I can get it out with my easy out. He also said they had almost 100k on them when he told me about 60k before but I planned on going through them anyway so it`s no big deal to me. Anyway, thanks for the info guys.
