No all cranks are not created equal :D

Just my opinions but for the import stuff I feel Scat is the premier crank.
They are actually a crank company & do most finish machining in house along with profiling.

From there I use Callies which are excellent. The Dragonslayer is the only one forged offshore I know of but is finished in house.

Then if you are real serious I go to Oliver which is a work of art but not exactly cheap :D
Also use Bryant & Winberg but in this price range I prefer the Oliver.

There are others that are excellent like Crower & Lunati but this is what we use.

On the Scat, in over 12 years of using & selling them I have not had to send one back & have not had a problem that was the fault of the crank.
They do everything from cast clear to $2500+ billets.

I cannot say the same for some of the other imports especially regarding sizing issues graemlins/sad.gif
The only Scat that is finished offshore is the cast line but they are finish polished & checked in house & their reject rate has been upwards of 20%.
Guess where these "blems" end up?? Point is, you might pay a couple of dollars more but buy from a reputable Scat dealer ;)

Mike,

One question..

Callies told me the Dragonslayer used the same core as the Callies Magnum. The difference was that the Dragonslayer was not heat treated as deep as the Magnum and the finish work wasn't as "pretty" as the Magnum

mc71454, I was told the same from Callies when I bought mine + it only has 1 keyway instead of two. No mention of it being forged elsewhere.
I put my money on what wolfplace says tho. As the customer service from Callies is less than ummm.. decent .. Took them 11 months to tell me a crank ( stealth )was junk. I got it at an auction and a Callies rep guaranteed it was good and came with a certificate claiming so. Well I missplaced the cert. and ended up w/ a Dragonslayer.

I cannot say for a certainty where the Dragonslayer is forged as the information is second hand but I have been told by more than one pretty reliable source that the forging is done offshore.
It is still a quality piece & like the 4340 Scat cranks I feel this quality is because of the control in both finishing which is done in house & the fact that both companies are very particular about which foundries are doing the forging.
Regardless of what some other companies say or imply, all these import forgings do not come from the "same place" :D
I personally feel the Dragonslayer & the Scat 4340 crank are very close in quality.
The whole Callies line of cranks are really outstanding.
You can get into the higher end Callies & Crower type cranks & then you get into the real good stuff like Oliver & Bryant, but,,, they are all priced accordingly ;)

You probably ain't going to get a $1500 to $2000 crank on ebay for $399 :D

Back to the original question, no all cranks are not created equal.

Mike,

What about the Howards stuff sold by Competition Products. It's reasonably priced and stated as all american forgings.

Good stuff???

They are machined by Callies.
Saw them at the PRI show & they look pretty good but other than that I don't really know anything about them.

I would probably get the Callies for the difference in price
They are about $1100 for a SB & the Callies Racemaster is not that much more.

I run a Lunati Racer Series forged crank in my ride. 4 years of beating the hell out of it, including nearly hydrolocking the engine one time during a needle/seat failure on the carb graemlins/sad.gif It's still rockin. Very quality piece, IMO graemlins/thumbsup.gif
