Hi there. I know what detonation is and i know what causes it.

My question is how do I check for it when my engine/exhaust is so load I can't hear myself think, let alone listen for pinging noises?

I'm gaining more and more performance out of my 350 sbc and starting to punch out some respectible power figures in the 450Lb/400hp range (at wheels). I gues I'm just paranoid....TIA

The best way to verify detonation is to examine the spark plugs. You will need an illuminated magnifying device to do this. If the engine is detonating, there will be tiny particles of aluminum on the porcelain part of the plugs.

Look at the insulator on the plugs for welded on flecks of black or aluminum. You're into pretty severe detonation if you find any.
