I finally am getting to my transmission now that the engine is done and have run into a problem, and since you have the same hughes th-400 I figured I'd ask you. My trans. came with a hole on the drivers side where the speedometer gear and housing go in and have spent half the day calling around to try and find the correct one for it. A guy I talked to at hughes said "anything for a th-400 will fit/work" but according to another guy who makes and sells these for a living says theres 6 kinds of housings and like 22 different kinds or gears. What I want to ask you is what do you have fr a speedometer gear and housing and where'd you get it from?? And also would rear end gearing and tire size make a difference in which speedometer gear is the best (someone told me it does).
Thanks in advance,
Aubrey

Hey,

I only have a quick minute right now. I took the Speedo unit out of my spare TH400 and put it right in to the cavity of the Hughes. All you need is a donor core to get one.

I did not go through the speedo gear change as it was/is one of those things to "get around too".

I will get back to you a little later with some more info, I have to run right now.

Here's a reference. You'll have the large speedo gears. http://www.chevelles.com/shop/speedo.html

Thanks Gene,

I was looking for that, couldn't remember where I saw it.

Thank you, that was helpful. The "expert" I talked to said I should talk to the people at hughes and ask what year/make/model they made their th-400 after, Tom do you know off hand what hughes make it after? If not I'll call them tomorrow. That chart helps me figure out which gear to choose, but about the housing, is every one the same for a 400? My freind got one from a junkyard that was supposedly out of a 400 off a buick, but the housing didn't fit, do you suppose the 400 housing/gear was mistaken with a 700r4 housing/gear, I hear they're hard to tell apart. And still I have to decide which gears and tires, because what I have now is garbage. I want 3.73s for the gears but no idea what tires yet. I calculated 3.73s with a 28" tire and the number at the end was lower than the 26" tires with 3.55 gears, does this mean the 26" tire with 3.55 combo is better, because if so 3.55 are just that much better for cruising.
Thanks for all the help,
Aubrey
