I know it's a ford but it's for the wifes DD - I test drove one on saturday and really liked it. Decent power & the milage is 18/25 - My 05 TrailBlazer is 15/20 so it would definately be an improvement. Also has a 5 star front & side impact rating. Just wondering if anyone owned one and your thoughts.

My buddy has one.... he works for Ford and it's his company car. Before that he had a V6 Escape. He really likes it, and it's definately in a higher class than the Escape. Bigger, more powerful, and more luxurious. The Edge he's got isn't really high level, I think the only uplevel option it has is the DVD player in the back seat. He says it rides/handles much better than the Escape, and has more punch too. I haven't driven it, so I don't have first hand experience. But, from a tire-kicker's point of view, it's much nicer than my girlfriends Escape....though a little more car-like, ,and less truck like.

IMO, it's a really nice car. The reclining rear seats are cool.... more comfortable to watch DVD's there than on my crappy couch at home! :D

A buddy of mine bought the lincoln version of the edge. They were willing to take more off the price and he got a little nicer car.

I posted this review elsewhere. Hope this helps:

My family took a vacation to the Outer Banks in North Carolina this past summer. Since my daughter invited one of her girl friends to come along, we needed something larger to make the trip. I asked my fleet manager at work if we had any SUV's or minivans available. All that was left was an '07 Edge. Had a 3.5 and was NOT AWD.

Anyway, after spending a week with the Edge, gotta say it was a positive experience. With 2 teenage girls and my 12 year old son sitting in the back seat, they were a little cramped but had plenty of leg room, even with the driver's seat all the way back. With the fold down cup holder (occupies the middle backrest of the back seat) in the upright position, my daughter complained it hurt her back after hours of travel. Otherwise, they were able enjoy the ride without complaining about "he's touching me" and typical sibling arguments like that. Back seat travelers did like the power port in the back of the console, and there was an RF jack inside the console for ipods.

My wife and I had plenty of room up front and found the seats comfortable. I became accustomed to all of the controls quickly, although I hate the Multi-function switch position. This is a fleet vehicle, so there were not many bells and whistles, only the necessities typically found in a rental vehicle. I missed not having the radio controls in the steering wheel. Seating position is high, I was "almost" up there with many small SUV's!

As far as loading it up with luggage, we were able to cram quite a bit in it. Luggage included one large suitcase, about 4 "carry-on" size bags, misc bags of food, toiletries, DVD's, a small coller, and other misc stuff, along with 2 boogie boards. There is space under the back seat for small items. This Edge did not have a roof rack. We would have liked to have taken OUR pillows and some beach chairs and umbrella, but there was no room for them. Still, we brought everything we NEEDED. Oh yeah, and I wasn't able to see out the back window, but the large outside rear view mirrors helped immensely.

Gas mileage was great for a vehicle such as this! IIRC, it has an 18 gallon tank, and we make it to the outer banks WITHOUT a fuel stop, a 343 mile trip Bel Air to Kill Devil Hills! It averaged 22.3 MPG on the highway, including sitting in 2 traffic jams! The worse MPG was 19.5 including waiting 45 minutes for the ferry to arrive while idling with the AC on.

The V6 performed well, but torque-steers like mo-fo! I was satisifed with the shift points of the trans. Brakes stopped very well, handling was decent but I would have upgraded the tires and wheels had I bought one of these things.

While on the ferry from Hatteras to Okracoke, had a guy ask me lots of questions about the Edge. He said it looked like the BMW (yeah, right).

We put 1153 miles on it and were pleased with the experience. On a long haul such as this, we didn't feel tired after getting out of it. I would recommend one of these to anyone considering it. It's definitely more nimble than an SUV and was much easier to park than SUV. Just ask the guy with the Tahoe who couldn't park in a space at putt-putt. After many tries, he gave up. I wheeled the Edge in there on the first try. http://www.lincolnsonline.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif However, if you like to take lots of stuff with you on a beach vacation, you may want to look at something else. I now know why there are so many SUV's driving around on the streets of the Outer Banks.

That's my (unprofessional) take on the Edge.

18-25 mpg to me is horrible. they are making vehicles with 40 plus mpg today. i will always wonder why Ford makes "Gas Guzzlers" with the soaring gas prices.
as for mechanics view. i no many mechanics working for ford dealerships. i asked them today about the edge and the mustangs. there response was "a ford is a ford, and you no what it stands for" haha so i laughed.

just my 2 cents

Ford pulled ahead of Toyota recently to take over the number one spot in overall quality, also take a look at consumer reports.

$2500 rebate plus $1200 off sticker( Ford A plan), a very generous offer on my clean trade-in (higher than NADA guide trade-in quoted online), 2007 FWD...sticker was $32K+.
Best part of the deal was my wife loves this car.

I would have to agree. One would think Ford could have squeezed out another 8-10 MPG if they tried.

What's with you guys and bashing the Edge for mpg's? Check out the comparison of 10 competitors:
http://www.automotive.com/2007/12/ford/edge/compare/index.html

The only one in that comparison that got notably better mileage than the V6 Edge was a 4 cyl Forrester that had 93 less hp. And it only got 5mpg better, not 8-10.

40 mpg?? Most small cars don't get that.....

Yes, maybe they could get a little better mileage with a smaller 4 cyl. But I don't think the Edge was designed to be a high mileage car. It's just too big to be considered an "economy car". It's 4000 lbs... High mileage in a car this size = slow. (or hybrid....ie Escape)

Alwhite..... I apologize in advance for polluting your productive thread. However, I have trouble sitting back and letting the BS fly.

i will always wonder why Ford makes "Gas Guzzlers" with the soaring gas prices.
Because some people want them. Not everybody wants a tiny economy car. Some people do, but they're not for everyone.

Yeah, all new Fords are POS's.

I just don't think the mileage is all that good. It may be a fine vehicle other than that. I feel that if I am going to sacrifice something ( down sizing of the vehicle ) then there should be a benefit ( significant gas mileage increase ) otherwise I personally would go for a full size vehicle, have all the room I need and just not worry about the gas mileage.

There's a few Toyota models that list 38-40 mpg highway, and VW diesels are at 50 plus mpg with people reporting modified ones at 55 mpg.

Wood, I understand that. That's why I said "most". There are some cars that get 40mpg, but not all that many. However NONE of them are 4000 lb SUV's in the same class as the Edge.

Gas mileage is secondary to me... :boring:
No way in hell I'd put my wife (and grandkids) in some POS econobox just to save a few bucks at the gas pump. :(
In fact, one of the guys here in the shop lost his 21 year old daughter last Friday night in a roll over.
If y'all are under the impression the Edge is a small car...it is NOT. Very comfortable seating for 5.
And we also researched the crash rating on this vehicle before making the purchase...equipped with full canopy airbags.

I feel the same way.

I love the argument people have that tiny cars like the Pruis are as safe as an SUV. There was something on the news the other day about it not being any safer in a SUV. If a Tahoe and Prius have a collision, I'd rather be in the Tahoe.
