: New spindles?

Hey guys, I'm tearing into my chevelle and got to the front suspension today. I got the brakes of and noticed that the spindle shaft, the machined finished shaft that the rotors mount onto, has a section that is rough. This is on both driver and passenger sides. Do i need new spindles? When I look at pics online, the spindle shaft is COMPLETELY machined unlike these. Thanks for your time.

I had this same problem on my '67. When I pulled the drums off, the spindle was chewed up. You need to replace the spindles, as this is the area where the bearings ride on the spindle shaft.

In the long run, this can be a very dangerous for you. The shaft could crack through this damage and then break off.

Is the rough casting between the inner and outer bearing surfaces? If so it wont be a problem as the entire length is not always a machines surface. If it is under a bearing then it will need replaced.

as long as it's smooth where the bearings sit- way at the inside and way at the outside just inside where the threads for the nut are- you are good to go.
the roughness in between is from the awesome tolerance control they had in the casting process 35 years ago.
