Well on friday @ T N'T, i smkoked my rear end. Took out the 3rd member case, and the 4.11 gears in the ford 9". im going to get some new gears but i was wondering if by some chance somone had an aftermarket 9" 3rd member casing or some new 4.11's laying around they wanted to sell. Just curious, let me know....thanks

Did it pull the pinion out of the 3rd member? I'm no 9" expert but a stock 3rd member should hold up to the time you have listed.

No it broke the c shaped piece that holds the detroit locker in {sorry i dont know the proper name}, and cracked the 3rd member, and sheared about half the teeth off the ring gear, quite the mess.

I didnt set it up, i had a local guy who races Fords set it up, why what would the back lash have to do with it going to hell? I honestly dont know the details about the internals of a third member.

Sorry to hear that. to bad im so far we got lot of 9 inch stuf at the shop..

we like building them they are really tuff..

the anwser is always in the rebuilt on all the one that go bad.
I am not a Ford afectionado but a 9 inch will take major abuse in stock form. If you beef them up they will out last any 12 bolt even done to the nuts.

I we can help you we have 3 DLooker / 1 35 spline spool and any gear you would like..

Now there is a place in Charllote North Carolina
call Muscle Motor and the have many good use parts for sale real nice to deal with i like buying rad from them.. the email is www.musclemotorparts.com/ (http://www.musclemotorparts.com/) try them for price they are real competetive. they have a wide selection awsome parts ( USE NASCAR )

also try ebay

good luck with the rebuild never like to see any body brake down at the track....

I saw the nascar gears on EBAY from them, are they all beat to hell or are they still good enough to take alot of drag and street abuse? Im just dont want to buy somthing used and have it let go on me and be right back in the same situation.

Alain Alain,
I don't agree with the idea that a 9" will outlast a built 12 bolt.
I've seen 9" break, and i've seen 12 bolts break, it really comes down to who sets up the gears.

Nick,
Backlash has everything to do with it breaking, too much backlash means that the pinion will be hitting the gear harder on the starting line.

I have .006" backlash on my 12 bolt, and my friend with the really heavy Chevelle has much tighter backlash then that! But since mine is street driven i went a little looser.

If you want good parts:
www.markwilliams.com (http://www.markwilliams.com)

I find his equipment in more then a few top qualifying Stock eliminator rides.

I bought Moser axles, ford style housing ends, an Eaton posi, richmond gears, strange caps, and a Moser pinion flange.
I'd look at Mark Williams if i were to do it again, since alot of stockers use there equipment.

I have the caviar taste, you could say :D

and...12 bolts use less power, because of the relation of the pinion to the ring gear graemlins/thumbsup.gif

and...12 bolts use less power, because of the relation of the pinion to the ring gear Theoretically yes, proven no.

The Ford nine is the way to go on a race car.
The advantages of the Ford 9:
Lighter weight
Service-ability
Availability of lighter, high end parts
Stronger axle tubes
Ease of gear change

12 bolt advantages:
Um

Hmhm, well anyway there made by GM :D

No doubt, a nice original SS would be missing something without the 12 bolt. But for a race car I'd build a Ford 9.

Did Ferd steal the design from Chevy? I used to change the 3rd member in my old 62 Impala every weekend after a trip to the track.

here's the article I read:
Lighter? 2-3% aint much in the power loss dept. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/0304_nine/

I've seen the old BOP design but I think it may have been stolen from Ford. The Ford was out in the 50's. I'm not positive though.

That 2-3 percent is based on theory alone.

OK for the quality of use parts at M/M they are
awsome no crap parts there and the garranty all the parts sold.

I really hate to say this Guys but the 9 inch Ford for racing is the best.

We build a 42inch unit w/ Moser axel / a spool /and 5.32 Pro gear. IN a stock Ford Nodular
housing and cap 0.62 bering housing ( ps you have to get a Spool that is made for that application ) and he runs a Quick 8 car on the week end he has never hade a problem and the pig was pull many time for season inspection.

Its got to be his 4 year runnig it. and the banjo
is only got a small brace in the back

wow please im not a Ford lover DAD just in case
the old man is waching up staire....

I love my GM DAD PS did you know that God love a BBC and that he forgive FORD and MOPAR driver

it,s in his nature to forgive...

well i must add my two cents now chevy missed the boat with there 12 bolt or 8.5 10 bolt by not having bolt in axles maybe they should have looked over at olds and stole there idea .other than that they are a good rear end but the 9 inch is still easer to fix.now i have no problem with used gears as long as they are not wore out and are set up right .my nova has been running a set of used 456s for three years now and raced every other week end ,knock on wood
