Hello Im looking for a set of heads for my 468 10to1 bbc.I am looking at heads in the 1000-1200 dollar range and have found several different models.I was looking at the procomps but nobody has anything good to say about them and I kind of feel like a sell out buying them anyway.Im looking at the summit iron rec port 308 cc heads and the gm 088 heads.Do any of you have opinions on these heads. Thanks for any help

Those both flow about the same but the 088 has bigger ports. I saw a set of summit heads that had porting that flowed in the 380's cfm.

Regarding the Summit heads: I just called them a couple days ago inquiring about them. I was asking about header fitmrnt issue and asked him to read any footnotes he may have regarding them; the last one stated these are Dart Iron Eagle heads. I dont know if the flow #'s Dart privides are accurate but if they are....very impressive especially on the exhaust side. For Summits price of $1290 I think you would be hard pressed to find out of the box bang for your buck that is better in the $1200 range. Regardless of what you buy please post back what you choose, why and any pertaining info. Good luck.

Why not just get a set of 781 or 049 ovals and get them professionally ported with larger valves. They are capable of 600+ hp on pump gas based on some of the motors on this site. Bang for the buck, I think they would be hard to beat. Also, being that you are running 10:1 compression, you will most likely be running a somewhat mild cam. The smaller runners of these heads would most likely work very well with a cam that is recommended for 10:1 compression.

I have thought about the 781 and other types of heads.I called a machine shop in my area to check on prices for putting in larger valves and checking for cracks, milling and such and the quoted me 400-500 in labor. Then I have to buy valves, springs maybe studs.Plus what you pay for the heads to begin with.I have seen some 781s that need redone for 200 dollars. So im up to 1100 for a set of 20 year old heads. With all the numbers guys and the advent of ebay plus some high cost machine work it doesnt make as much sense to buy the old stuff anymore.

I havent looked at the powerhouse heads yet.I see all kinds of aluminum heads on ebay for sale. They are pretty much the procomps and there was a guy from indiana selling them for 969.00 assembled last week.I dont see anymore from him on ebay so far. These heads are pretty cheap but if you ask around nobody knows anything about them.Everyone says they are crap but I have never seen a pair on a car or talked to anyone that has run them.I kind of feel like a sell out buying something like them so that is why I was looking at the iron heads that gm has and summit style.

IMO, I'd save up a few more bucks and buy the Brodix Race-Rite oval port heads. Do it once and do it Rite! ;)
Stock exhaust port locations...no header hassles on a '66. Plenty of TQ for the street and a better match to your 468 than the larger rect port heads.
And I'd recommend contacting Mike Lewis (Wolfplace) for a competive price.

I understand the trouble with dumping a bunch of money in a set of stock heads, but they just seem to really perform well for the money. I don't know all of the specifics with this, but I have heard a lot of builders out there say that it is never a good idea to run a head right out of the box. Some clean up work is always a good idea. I cannot say how important it really is, but with the redone ovals, the heads will be fresh, and any machine work that "should be done" to any out of the box head will also be done.
From most of what I have seen, a ported set of the right iron oval heads will perform similar to most of the as cast ~300-320cc runner aftermarket heads. The smaller runners in the ovals seem to make for a great torque curve also, plus the additional machine work done on the ovals that would not be done on and out of the box aftermarket head. Personally, and I say personally because it is what I did, I would get a set of ovals done and run them. If you want more power in the future, start saving up for a set of aluminum ported aftermarket heads.
Also, although I have heard alot about there being "no such thing as a race ready out of the box head" I really dont know what the head guys are talking about. Does any one have any insight with respect to this? Is it true or are people just trying to sell machine work?
Thanks,
Adam
