: HEI Performance - which one?
Hobart May 27th, 04, 5:57 PM Hi guys. I did a search, and came up with 300 hits but never addressed my question. I'm thinking about ditching my Ignitor II and going back to HEI. My old one I ran with an MSD 6AL box, but I want to keep it all self-contained now. The engine is a pump-gas 468, oval ports/flat-tappet hydraulic/dual plane/3310 Holley/etc., mild, just a mid-12 second street car. Should I rebuild my old one and use an aftermarket module? Or am I better off popping for one of the complete aftermarket HEI's, like this Mallory unit for $160 from Summit: MAA-8548201C, Chevrolet: 265-502, adjustable advance, OE factory-type harness, with high output coil, HEI distributor. This new HEI distributor from Mallory features a CNC-machined cast 356 T-6 aluminum housing for lightweight durability. It includes Mallory's new mechanical advance mechanism and adjustable vacuum advance, and comes with a red cap and rotor with brass inserts. It's a direct plug-in replacement with OE factory-type harness connectors and it includes a Mallory's high-performance coil.
http://store.summitracing.com/ I'm not talented enuff to figure out a link directly to this, or I would have. Opinions appreciated. Thanks.

Not any technical input, but a suggestion...If you have specific questions like that, and want a great ignition person to answer them, IgnitionMan still posts at Stevesnovasite.com (I think he's been banned from here). There are a lot of good people here too, but when it comes to distributors and stuff, he is kind of like a walking encyclopedia- or the UDHarold of ignition if you will. As a matter of fact, I believe that he answered a question like this in the last few days or so over there. IF not, Im sure someone here will for sure be able to answer it! Just a suggestion ;)
gasgzlr May 27th, 04, 7:35 PM He has not been banned. He's still around, and yes - he is amongst the best when it comes to inquiries regarding ignition systems.
Bomber '67 May 28th, 04, 2:23 AM I run that same very Mallory HEI distributor on my 496. Mallory does not really promote it as a super high performance unit - but don't tell my engine!

Unclepennybags May 28th, 04, 5:58 AM Go with either a Dale Johnson (Mag shop in Buffalo NY) rebuild/recurve, or Ignition man. It will look good, and the curve will be for YOUR engine.
Hobart May 28th, 04, 3:36 PM Unclepennybags, any web address or phone info for either of them? I tried searching the net, but came up empty handed. Thanks, and thanks to all for your help.

Buzzbomb May 28th, 04, 7:37 PM Just to add to Unclepennybag's link-

Inicidentally, it seems that Ignitionman (davessmallbodyheis) seems to like the MSD stuff the best when it comes to aftermarket igntion systems, if he doesnt redo your dist. Found that post at Steves Nova site yesterday, and thats basically what he said.

Hobart May 30th, 04, 9:19 PM Anyone else care to share? ;)
Motor Martyr May 30th, 04, 9:39 PM MSD makes a "Ready to Run" distributor, which is a small body self contained unit.
