I've read were Harold recommends running 30 wt non detergent for breaking in a cam. I've got a rebuilt 402 and one of his lunati cams and wondering if I should run the non detergent for the engine and cam break in or just regular 30 wt. Would 30 wt non detergent wear the motor faster then regular 30 wt? Thanks, KJ

I think you'll be alright breaking it in with regular motor oil, just make sure the cam, lifters are all gooped up with assembly lube, most say EOS helps, pre lube the motor, and cross your fingers graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I ran the Castrol HD 30WT. It has a real strong odor compared to regular motor oil, I assume this is the sulphur in it. I have used this regularly on cam changes with good success.
I would NOT use non detergent oil at any time, especially during break-in. If anything, run a HD oil or racing oil for the simple reason these oils sport better additive packages to prevent scuffing.

Wipe the lobes down thick with cam-lobe "moly" and then add one or two small bottles/cans of good old GM, EOS, (Engine Oil Suppliment), motor break-in lube and use straight run H/D 20wt or 30wt!! Imho...
Run her about 500 or so miles and drain her and add what you want to run!!

PS., EOS is about the best cam break-in lube oil additive there is...
Thanks for the replys everybody. I went to the local dealership earlier today and picked up some eos. Just didn't know if the non detergent was a good idea. I was just gonna do the initail break in and change the oil to 10w30. This is my first fresh motor to break in, just want to make sure I get the right oil before inital fire up. If possible could someone explain the difference between the non detergent and detergent oil, does one lubricate better then the other? Thanks again, KJ.

Non detergent is just what is says - no cleaning agents. It would probably not eliminate the moly cam lube as fast. I just run the 30WT HD oil and have not had a problem.
