: Difference in Heavy Chevy stripe kits?
chevl71 Oct 23rd, 07, 7:12 PM Does anyone have any experience with the Heavy Chevy stripe kits?
Stencils and Stripes or Phoenix Graphics both make them. Are there others? Which is more accurate?
Stencils and Stripes says they are 2 mil just like GM. "Using original GM stripes and decals. These are screen printed and ready to use individual pieces. Due to the thinness of the stripe they are not computer cut."
They also pre-cut the door handle area for correct placement. They have one part number for the fender and trunk lid decals. Are they the same? (the hood is different).
Phoenix just says vinyl. Includes the rear stripe. Is that across the trunk lid?
Anyone use either of these?
Dave427 Oct 23rd, 07, 7:42 PM I used Phoenix Graphics, there is 4 Heavy Chevy signs. 3 are the same , 1 is smaller. The small goes on the hood, the others go on the fenders and the trunk lid. There is no stripe on the trunk lid.

BillK Oct 23rd, 07, 7:50 PM Doug,
I would like to know the answer too. I am getting ready to order a set for mine. I do however have almost a complete NOS set of GM ones to compare them to, plus a lot of pictures of the ones on my car before it was painted. The GM ones have the door handles precut.
Dave427 Oct 23rd, 07, 8:02 PM Yes I forgot my door handles are pre-cut, the decal slip over the door handle didn't need to remove it.

chevl71 Oct 23rd, 07, 9:31 PM Hey, we're all in good company!
Dave, yours looks awesome! Did you like the quality of the stripes? How difficult to install/position the long stripes?
Bill, let us know when you compare to the GM ones. I recall some discussion about an eBay Heavy that had funky stripes (I don't want to get those!). What color are you doing?
BillK Oct 23rd, 07, 9:47 PM Doug,
I am going back with the original color. Burnt Orange Metallic with Black Stripes

53Chev Oct 23rd, 07, 10:12 PM I would by far recommend phoenix graphics over S&S. The quality of the material is way better and they are liscensed by GM as factory repros. S&S states theirs are liscenced but they are actually not. I had a slight blemish on two of my stripe pieces and they(PG) sent me out a complete replacement kit at no charge. I had it the next day by 3 pm here in Canada. Definately excellent customer service!
If anyone needs the exact placement and measurements for the decals, just let me know and I will post the info.
Good luck!
Dave427 Oct 23rd, 07, 10:36 PM The quality of the stripes were excellent, you need lots of soapy water to get them positioned and yes the job sucked.

That be me! I posted one ebay HC with a repo stipe kit. There was another thread about a ebay HC and it had a similasr stripe kit on as well. The area in question is the front part of the stripe, that goes on the fendr. It is really off from mine(which I bought in '90)and the only origional HC I saw in high school, which was a real one. These ebay cars were really nice, and $$$, so I could not figure out why the stripe was wrong. Must be a manufacture defect. It looks like they cut up a rear stripe to make up the front one. Anyway, I am curious if any one makes them now correctly. Also the hood decal , HEAVY CHEVY is slanted, the fender and trunk are not. I can't remember if the trunk is bigger than the fender decal. I could measure them when I get home.

Cool Heavy Bill! Are the NOS strips thick? I mean , a few mil's thick. The ones I have (repo)are thin and the original HC I saw in hs had thick feel to them, just curious. I would have liked to have a orig. set to use. Seems like the original decals on all the muscle cars were really thick compared to new ones.
BillK Oct 24th, 07, 9:25 PM Mike,
Actually the oem's are pretty thin. I had to replace one of mine back in 74 and it was a pain. What Dave said about the soap is the correct way to do it. If I have a chance I will measure one of the new ones I have. I was trying to get a complete set of NOS ones, but am still missing a couple. After looking at one of the ones I have, I am not sure what kind of shape they are in after 30 years anyway, and as long as the repo's are the correct dimensions they should be ok.
By the way, the picture with my helper on the hood was taken in 1974.

Is the repo set you have the correct contour on the front fender? What brand are they? Any opinion on them?
Bill
The S&S says it's 2 mil thick. Is that about how thick your GM's are?
Anyone know if the Phoenix hood decal slants? I'd like to see how these compare side by side with OEM.

I have the PG kit and have no complaints. I dont know what you mean by the hood decal slanting....can you explain?

I thought the letters on the hood were slanted to go straight back (on the car) but the bottom follows the hood line. So the letters wouldn't be square like the fender letters, but tilted. Is this a correct assumption? Or is the hood decal just smaller?
53Chev Oct 25th, 07, 10:27 AM I ust went downstairs to the parking garage and looked mine over. The only difference between the fender/trunk decals and the hood decals is size. There is no slant to the letters on any of the decals except for the one on the front hood.
If any needs the specs for placement of the kit let me know as I have the documentation for it.

This is what my front decal looks like, slant to the side, only on the front. I will have to look at old recipts for the mfg. of the kit I bought, I think I got from Chevelle Classics, who are not around any more, I believe. I don't have the time right now to find the old post about the fender stripe, but in it I attached a pic of my stripe as compared to the ebay car, you can def. see the difference!
53Chev Oct 25th, 07, 6:45 PM I stand corrected. I misunderstood the post and did double check and there definately a slant to the hood decal only.
chevl71 Oct 25th, 07, 10:39 PM here it is; cheese factory funky stripes

They start to taper down too far back on the fender.
versus Mikes that stays wider farther forward;

This was the post I remembered.
72 malibu Oct 26th, 07, 9:18 AM That is the post, the one I first noticed the difference. That is the first HC built I believe, and it is a sweet ride, but the stripe , the stripe! Anyway, the other HC was as nice and was gold, a '72, had the same stripe defect. Maybe Bill K. can check his real stripe against the phots here and let us know what his looks like, put a end to this, or at least know what to look for.

This was the other one, which is for sale again on bay, and a post on TC again. Looking at it, they could have put the HC logo on level as well on the fender!A nice, clean car, but for that $, I would want it right.
Dave427 Oct 26th, 07, 5:15 PM Sweet!!!

chevl71 Oct 27th, 07, 2:17 PM Interesting, here's another one on eBay with the taper going to the back of the wheel opening on the fender. number 180170915989.
I wonder of some of the repops have the long taper versus the short taper.
53Chev Oct 27th, 07, 8:19 PM I have the short taper and it is the kit from phoenix graphics. Still my first choice for HC stripe kits. I know for a fact that they are liscenced by GM. They are supposed to be exact duplicates of the originals.
chevl71 Oct 29th, 07, 9:00 PM I hope the short-taper ones are still available. Here's another long taper one on eBay.

Yep, that looks like a wrong type to me. Looking at that car I noticed another difference, that is the thickness of the center stripe. It seems like they divided it up to much, leaving the center part to thin. It is hard to see, but you can in the open door shot. Well I hope you guys doing one of these gets the right kit, obviously there is a wrong one out there.
BillK Oct 30th, 07, 7:54 PM I have a lot of pics of my car when it was new but they are all on 35mm slides :( I promise I will scan some of them soon so you can see the correct stripes.

smokenjoep01 Feb 22nd, 11, 10:07 AM What was decided. Was the Phoenix graphics kit oem correct? Do they still offer it?
