: 402 build
Steves71 Jan 18th, 04, 3:53 PM I am building up a 402 and was wondering what you all thought I should use for a cam and carb. The engine is a .60 over 402 with "I think stock Pistons" and 3931063 heads. what do you think would give me the best results. I'm not going to drag race this thing just want it street powerful.

Anthony Jan 18th, 04, 5:51 PM Ill help ya out all i can, im currently building a 402 also, but mine is 20 over not 60. For most street applications the Edelbrock RPM air gap is a popular manifold right now. I plan on using a 750 holley double pumper. My cam is a Comp Cam 274-280 duration cam. lift is 568 578. SHould be fairly loppy idel but not terrible for driving around town. My heads are 290 casting numbers, ive had the 2.19 1.88 valves put in with gasket matched ports. my engine builder is estimating about 450-475 hp or so. Anything else i can help ya with let me know. Ive used alot of the suggestions of the people on this board in making my combo
SWHEATON Jan 18th, 04, 5:55 PM We need a lot more info here Steve to help you out. First of all what gear are you running,is it stick or auto,if auto which trany, what exhaust are you running, stock cast ex maniflds, headers, etc.
And also you need to be more specific on the cars usage,weekend/saturday night cruiser or daily use,how much perf are you really looking for (H/P & TQ),and so on.

Anthony Jan 18th, 04, 5:55 PM also i looked up your casting #'s on your heads. Shouldnt be to hard to get decent compresion out of it. I had to buy differnt heads, mine were huge 292 cast number i think, open chambered. hard to get any compresion out of them. the 290 made it possible to get 9.5 comp or so. if anyone is intrested in my 292 heads let me know. i dont need them.
Steves71 Jan 18th, 04, 6:18 PM I want my car to be mainly for saturday cruisin and local car shows and maybe a pass or two at the track to see what itll do. I dont want to tear the engine down every six months. I have 3.31's right now I have a brand new worked turbo 400. I have 2'1\2 flowmaster 40 series with a x over. I'm hoping for 375-450 hp. Thanks for the help

Nvr2Fast Jan 19th, 04, 9:33 AM Hey Steve,
I am running a 402 now 396 +.030". I chose the Edelbrock Performer RPM setup, that is cam, intake, and 750 carb. I am running a 3 in. x-pipe off my headers into Flowmaster 50 series mufflers and 2.5 in. out the mufflers. The car is very streetable, has a lopey, but managable cam, & good vacuum for the brakes. I am running an L-35 block with the stock closed chambered heads. I ran a different piston, Speed-Pro forged, which dropped the compression down to about 9.5:1.
With my current setup, I would say I'm in that 375-425HP range with a very forgiving setup. I have not had it dynoed yet, but using Desktop Dyno, and talking to a few people, Edelbrock included, they all said I'm right in that neighborhood.
BTW, rear end is a 12-bolt 3.73 POSI and trans is Muncie M-20.
