Im installing a smaller new cam (204/214, 420/442, 112lsa) from the previous cam that was in my SBC 283 (230/230 480/480 109lsa) and will be changing the old head gasket .041 to a Fel-Pro 1094 which is .015 thick. Will this get me more Piston to Valve clearance since im using a smaller lift cam, with a thinner gasket. In comparison the gasket will be .026 smaller then the old gasket and the cam lift will be .060 less on the intake and .038 less on the exhaust. By making this change I will have a .040 quench using the stock deck of .025.
I know that I need to mock the block and check for clearance using modeling clay, however I want to get an opinion before I go out and buy the gasket.

I can't imagine that there would be any V/P problems.

You will have a ton of clearence.
Not only are you putting in a cam with less lift you are spreading the lobe seperation which both closes the exhaust sooner & opens the intake later which means the valves are not open as far around TDC overlap.

Incase you were going to be changing the heads I think you can only go with a 1.94 intake valves on the 283 motors or there may be some contact issues.

No, you can run a 268HE or a 272 Energizer easy on a 283 with big valved, -291 heads!

I better clarify that by saying with four notch flat-tops..

Thats correct, so many people dont believe that you can stick Big valves in the small 283. Well i'm here to tell you it can be done. I have a set of fuelie heads 461 w/ 2.02/1.60 valves and I did not see any clearance problem with a 230/230 480/480 109lsa in this 283. Once again BIG valve will work in a 283. Write it down and take a picture it works. graemlins/hurray.gif This is not hearsay it living proof. However I do have a bore of 3.955 w/.080 pistons 4 valve reliefs. graemlins/beers.gif
