: Everyone with 049 heads, please post comubstion chamber size
rednecks70 Apr 9th, 04, 9:50 PM I had my cylinder heads cc'd at one shop last year and they came out to 110cc. I was talking to the owner of a different shop and he says that's impossible and proceeds to pull an 049 head off his shelf and cc'd them, they came out to 122. I know that sizes can vary but I'm curious to see what everyone else has, also for those of you with compression in the 10:1 to 10.5:1 range I would like to know what piston you are using. Thanks.
plain 69 Apr 9th, 04, 10:23 PM My 1973 049 castings were 121-122 cc's they varied from chamber to chamber.
gspan1830 Apr 9th, 04, 11:00 PM Your bringing up a very important subject to me. I'm in the market for a pair of heads but haven't really determined whether to go with open or closed chambers. I know that a flat top piston with closed chamber heads will have better flame travel than an open chamber head with a big dome but how much difference will it make in a street driven car or should i say weekend warrior?? I once had a 67 camaro (small block, 410 gear) with closed chamber heads and flat top pistons, rochester quad and man that thing would wind up on pump gas with ungodly torque but a big block is a different animal and cost is always a factor so im in a bit of a delima.
Racer 1320 swore by the closed chamber heads but im not into racing or tenths of sec.
I'm hoping some of the engine builders will chime in here and give some profressional opinions on heads and valve sizes amoung other things.
The head cc's depends on how much the heads have been milled. I believe it was mentioned in an earlier post that a head can be milled .040 without angle milling for the intake.
To do it once and do it right brings on a miriad of questions.
I originally purchased closed chamber heads to install on my motor. When I presented them to my builder he basically rolled his eyes and said that open chambers could be worth up to 50 hp more because of the valve shrouding.... Looking at the chamber it's not very hard to see why, as the chamber is a very deep tub, with a large vertical wall surrounding the valves on one side. I went out and bought the 49's.
Mike Feudo Apr 10th, 04, 11:32 AM One of the few things Ed and I agreed on. For anything but all out killer race motor use closed chamber heads. They are much less detonation prone (when set up correctly) and do build torque.
my '75 049 castings were also 121-122cc's varying from chamber to chamber. after milling they were 116cc. if your's are 110cc then someone milled the **** out of them. many of the 402 heads were 110-114cc and are a good compromise to bump up the compression and still not shroud the valve. 820's are the only castings that i know for sure that are in that range. i know there are others, but not sure which castings. Steve Schmidt built the 427 that was in my dad's Camaro and 820's are what he said to use. of course he worked on them a little too, though. but that motor ran extremely well for as mild as it was.
71454Chevelle Apr 10th, 04, 2:31 PM My 049's were originally around 121-122cc. I had them flat milled .040", now the check out around 113-114cc.
Johnny O Apr 10th, 04, 7:02 PM My 049's are now 115cc, after having them milled about .030....I wanted my compression about 10.5 or so, using 2349 pistons(TRW) .215 dome
rednecks70 Apr 10th, 04, 8:17 PM Thanks for the replies, I highly doubt they milled the heads to 110cc, but I talked to a shop today that has several sets of open chamber heads sitting on the shelf and he is going to cc them and get back to me. I need to get a dial indicator and take some measurements myself and make sure this thing is going to be in the 10:1 range.
