I need to buy a new helmet and was wondering what the rules are for sure. Is Snell M2005 the required helmet or have they gone to SA2005. I don't have a current rule book.

The "M" designates that it has a motorcycle rating but it can be used. The "SA" is the one for racing and is likely the preferred helmet.

The SA is somewhat fire retardant, i think, so it might give you a little better protection if needed. Since your spending the money anyhow it might be a good idea.

That is correct. The SA has a nomex liner, but the M is perfectly acceptable for as fast as we're going.
