I dont think the N means that but maybe someone can confirm. BTW the case number was used 1970 -74 for all three models.

Trans is from a 1971 Trans Am, which in '71 were all 455HO cars.
70 Gold Nugget Oct 21st, 07, 10:09 PM Here is what the guts of a M22 look like...the M21 angle of the gears is not as /// like the 22's are...I would remove the inspection plate and check the guts cause many of them have 21 gears in them...changed out from being abused...etc...those Muncie guts belong to an LS6 boys...
There is a Pontiac guy somewhere that is looking for that particular tranny I bet...and would pay a premium for it...

Wheelhop Oct 21st, 07, 10:15 PM Those T/A's SD's are going for High $$ , could be worth a lot to the right buyer.
70 Gold Nugget Oct 21st, 07, 10:18 PM Exactly right on Jim...those cars are bringing crazy money cause they are rare old birds...hahaha...that is what I was trying to say...

But the LS5's are better. :p
I know that had no contribution to this thread but I had to say it anyway. :D
ls6ragtop Oct 22nd, 07, 8:34 AM Hi Rich,
As Dave and others have told you, your trans case is coded for a 71 Pontiac Firebird, but the assembly date you have indicates a build of August 28th of 1970, not August 28th of 1971. These cases are stamped for the model year they were intended to be used in. If this case was actually assembled August 28th of 1971, it would have been stamped P2M28C for use in the 1972 model year and would have a V.I.N. starting with 22N1XXXXX. I know this sounds confusing but each plant used it's own method of date coding parts and this was Muncie's method. Your trans is actually a pretty early production unit.
Hope this helps, Chris

I know that had no contribution to this thread but I had to say it anyway. :Dyour right, the LS5 didn't have the power of the ELLESSSIX:D:noway:
Dave Birdwell Oct 22nd, 07, 9:46 PM your right, the LS5 didn't have the power of the ELLESSSIX:D:noway:
True, dat, but you didn't have to change the plugs as often either :beers:
And yes, I've had them both.... :D
MEJ1990TM Oct 23rd, 07, 3:55 AM I'll take my LS5 with an LS6 cam, different intake, a Holley, and a good set of headers. It can just as hard. :D
And by the way I have both. Well the LS5 is actually my dads but I've got a 1970 LS6 awaiting a rebuild and a home. So :p

BIGBLOCK70Z Oct 23rd, 07, 6:14 PM that was interesting looking at those pictures thank you sir.
skyman51 Nov 7th, 07, 5:49 PM An M22 trans will have a drain plug on the side.

True, until 1970. ALL finespline input Muncies have a drain plug, regardless of what gearset is in the case. :hurray:
Chris R Nov 12th, 07, 2:32 PM Sounds like a nice item you have there.
Freddy Mercado Nov 12th, 07, 4:25 PM Very nice pictures and great info gentlemen.
BIGBLOCK70Z Nov 12th, 07, 5:42 PM what sucks is they made both course spline little shaft, and fine spline big shafts, both m22 and m21s
Dave Birdwell Nov 12th, 07, 8:34 PM what sucks is they made both course spline little shaft, and fine spline big shafts, both m22 and m21s
True, this is why I've studied Muncie-ology and know what's what with them. I can put one together blindfolded. As a general rule, Pre-1970 is coarse spline, and post-70 is fine spline. Beginning sometime in the 68 model year, they started adding the suffix A, B, or C to the date to indicate M20, M21, or M22 respectfully. I need to write a book from my notes, as there's times it's all too much to recall from the top of my head.
