: No longer feel the rush...
Skeeveman Oct 21st, 07, 5:15 PM Do you guys feel the same as you get used to the power over time? I've always been like this, and I think I've gotten there yet again. Today, I changed the plugs, reset the timing, and did some fine tuning on the carb's idle. I took it out for a few quick blasts, and I can tell it's got a lot crisper throttle response, and gets up there quicker and is running great, but it honestly is kind of boring again... But, I took my younger brother along for the ride, and he doesn't get a chance to tag along that often. He had a blast and had the white knuckle effect going on... I hate this hobby, it's so expensive, haha. Happiness cannot be found!

DOUG G Oct 21st, 07, 5:26 PM That sounds like a "speed bug bite" if I ever heard one. 13's,12's,11's,10's,9's... it'll never stop :noway:
bigjimzlll Oct 21st, 07, 5:27 PM Yup....you've got the dreaded "hotrodders disease". One thing that sounds like a cure is Nitrous..but believe me it isn't...Once you use Nitrous no matter what happens once back on motor alone it feels like a slug.
69bigblock Oct 21st, 07, 5:37 PM HAHAHAHAH. I agree, once you spray N/A is old hay...... I still have fun with it ..but spraying off the line is just fine.
M.Maner Oct 21st, 07, 5:38 PM Take it to the track and start racing.
Mike
GuysMonteSS Oct 21st, 07, 5:48 PM Yeah I fell the same as Skeeveman, thats why I'm planning a rebuild and a bit more power.
Guy
Dave427 Oct 21st, 07, 5:56 PM Take your neighbour or buddy for a ride scare the crap out of them. That works for me.
Dave
69 Ratt Vette Oct 21st, 07, 6:09 PM Ya, the cure is nitrous.............400 hit off the transbrake works well for me !!
driver Oct 21st, 07, 6:15 PM I was thinking on those lines today. Thinking maybe I should leave the drag racing for the younger boy's. I'm 50 now and boy does it cost a tone of money. I could have went racing today and passed on it,could have went last weekend and passed on it, is this a sign of not being as much fun as it once was? I'm in the mid nines now which I would have never thought would happen in my wildest dreams. I don't know? Maybe it's just a thing and it will be different by next racing season. I think every day stress pay's a part into as well.
JOHN WILSON Oct 21st, 07, 6:54 PM Yeah, I think that happens to everybody. You just get desensitized to the power. It started for me when I got my first go-kart when I was 10 years old. I drove it for a couple months, then my Dad adjusted the throttle linkage so the carb would fully open. Man what a rush, it would now go 25mph, up from 20. The little Honda 4.5hp motor had a totally different sound/feel. That feeling lasted for about a month then it seemed no different than before he adjusted the linkage.
FourEightyNine Oct 21st, 07, 6:58 PM Just dont drive your chevelle all winter, drive a really slow car in the mean time and get used to that one. Next time you drive the chevelle you should feel it again. Honestly I still get butterflies just about everytime I take my chevelle out and I bet you have wayy more motor in yours. Just an idea.
quikss Oct 21st, 07, 7:06 PM Sounds to me like it is time for a serious twin turbo big block set up. Get the horsepower up around 2000 or so, then try to get used to it!!!
Jeff
540Hotrod Oct 21st, 07, 7:16 PM I literally called a buddy of mine one night a few seconds after blasting a 30-145 mph run down an empty road......my question was...'Is it possible to get jaded by 800+HP?"
Since he has a similar deal...we both agreed it was.
It never ends.......

mr 4 speed Oct 21st, 07, 7:17 PM Heck,my mid 12 second Chevelle and 13 second Buick still keep me happy...
650hellcat Oct 21st, 07, 10:44 PM Thats so true, havn't raced my car in 3yrs, took it out couple weeks ago and I thought I was going to black out or something while barreling down the track. My car isnt even that fast, just havent driven anything fast in 3yrs.
Bomber '67 Oct 21st, 07, 11:41 PM Weird how speed jaded we can become.
The first fast car I owned was a '69 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet 4 speed - man did that car get me into a lot of trouble. Then in '79 the Superbike bug bit and I bought a Honda CBX - supposedly good for mid 11's @ 120 mph. One of my first year dealership service visits was when I thought it was losing power, that it didn't feel so fast. They had only sold 3 CBX's that year and the service writer listened with interest when I complained. A tech promptly took the bike in for inspection. Finding nothing obvious he took it for a quick ride. I heard it howl as he blasted off, and then again when he returned. The service writer came out and laughed a little as he told me: "sir, you have lost whatever respect of power and speed you may have had when you bought this bike - the tech says that your bike is as fast as they come from the factory!"
I don't know that I'll ever experience anything as quick and fast as John's 400 hit off the transbrake - but even he is building a more powerful engine.
It never ends. The only known cure for the speed disease is....more speed :)

Nice car, and how bad do you wish you would have held on to that one Thomas?
I'm still trying to get waht I have tuned to the fullest, and then be able to push the go pedal firmly without that one wheel spinning. Basically I'm still waiting for the speed bug to bite.
-SS454- Oct 22nd, 07, 12:08 AM I think a garanteed stop to that bug is Top Fuel. Every top fuel driver I heard, including John Force says you just never get used to it. I think it was Dean Skuza that said it scares him every time too haha.

I bet, zero to 320 in under 5 seconds would scare me silly. Whenever I watch those guys, I think man it would be awesome to drive one of those. Then I really think about what all is going on when they make a 1/4 mile blast, and say to myself, You couldn't do that.
Stokerboats Oct 22nd, 07, 1:37 AM I bet watching the catch net come up once you've realized that "good breaks matter" is quite a thrill too. Going fast as hell is great fun but on the other end of fast is knowing you can also stop safely if you need to. Catastrophy is only a contact away. Think about that and make sure your stuff is functioning well.:beers:
427L88 Oct 22nd, 07, 8:59 AM Jake, its called cognition. Please Sir, if you will, remember your first sexual encounter. No matter how clumsy and adolescent , tis still one of the biggest thrills. Even if you ended up dating Jenna Jamison later. Cognition.

Sounds like you need to switch roads. Running up and down the same straight stretch of road gets old real quick. Find yourself a good twisty mountain road and you'll find that a little horsepower goes a long ways towards having fun.
Chris Stanwyck Oct 22nd, 07, 10:05 AM Got back from the track yesterday and was talking to my son about the day and the tweaking that was needed to get better 60' times.
My wife snickered and said " I thought you said you were done with that car, for 7 years you have been saying your done".
Every year going in I think I am finished but come winter the virus comes back.
The big issue now is that 9's are close and that means licensing, a ten point and probably a long list of other requirements.
BillsCamino Oct 22nd, 07, 11:33 AM Yeah, I think that happens to everybody. You just get desensitized to the power.
I agree John.
Been thinking lately of selling mine. I've done everything with it that I set out to do and then some.
Don't care to go any faster because of all the safety changes required with that process.
Kinda bored with it...
Plus, what happened to Bob's car really hit home to me yesterday.

Every time you say that I have to laugh...........if only they could hear our conversations. :D
"Plus, what happened to Bob's car really hit home to me yesterday"
We've seen people get killed in these things.............but we all drive on anyway , dont we.
427L88 Oct 22nd, 07, 12:04 PM Truth be known, often a glimpse "over the edge" makes the here and now a better place.
rchevellea Oct 22nd, 07, 12:52 PM Like a few others have said. drive something slower for a while. like me...early last week I had to pull out my tranny (wierd noises) I got the problem fixed but wont have time to get it back in the car untill later thi week. when i pulled it out I had to use my backup car...my '70 bug with a whopping 65 horse power..man that thing is slow. I cant wait to get the car back together and go "test" the tranny to make sure all is well. good luck with your "disease" we all have it and we all deal with it in different ways. or how about HRA HOT RODDERS ANONOMOUS "Hi my name is Ryan I have been adicted for 4 and a half years now"....:D

I actually have a 79 model that is complete, yet has not run in over 20 years and Im considering spending some time on it. No bike on earth sounds like 6 cylinders in like at 13,000 rpm! I have always grown tired of the speed of my equipment except for one thing.....I have always kept a 500cc 2 stroke Mx bike..hop on one of those and open the throttle in 2,3, or even 4 gear with a fresh rear tire....never does it get old holding on for life and the front end just never comes down! LOVE IT TO THIS DAY ON MY CR500!
how69ss Oct 22nd, 07, 7:24 PM I threw a NOS sniper kit on my 427 69 and went from 8.71 to 8.08 in the 1/8th mile. It's a big difference, and the car felt just on the edge. What I like about the NOS is it can be off all of the time except at the track. I went with the Sniper kit because I knew if I got a bigger one (200 or 250 shot), I would end up using it. It should hit 7s once I tune the carb, put a purge kit on it, and tune the suspension.
ironhead Oct 22nd, 07, 11:02 PM I have a 98 chevy xtenda cab with a 5.7 L SPFI.Boy oh boy..this pickup has real nice manners.Instastart and crisp accel..albeit lacks WOT performance..but oh well.
Enter in the the first gen F body with the 427 BBC.No manners what so ever.Idles rough..scares kiddys..sets off car alarms..etc etc.I have tried talking to her..but she is set in her ways. She is going on 40 yrs with a few face lifts and set in her ways.Who am I to argue with an old girl?
fiscus Oct 23rd, 07, 9:38 PM I've been driving around all summer mostly in a 3 cylinder geo metro... Took the camaro out the other day for the first time in a while and it feels like a rocket ship!!
